Tonight was supposed to be a blue moon. We have a very clear night and a full moon, but it doesn't look blue to me.
* Alex looked up the blue moon - he was interested in knowing why it wasn't blue. And here is a definition of a "blue moon": A blue moon is the second full moon in a month. Because it only happens once every 3 years or so, it is rare. That is why we say, "Once in a blue moon...". The moon turns a blue color through particles of dust in the atmosphere but a blue moon is not necessarily blue and there was no prediction that it would be this time around - according to Alex.
So there you go. Our blue moon this month. I was able to take this relatively clear photo with my Sony smartphone.
Some extra information on the subject of moons...
Japanese people have a story about there being a rabbit on the moon, pounding on some sticky rice to make rice cakes. I can actually see the rabbit, but it's not upright at this time of year. Can you see it?
Here is an awesome article about the story on wiki. I really suggest you go over and read it. It is fascinating!
It seems that many people, especially in Asia, but also the Aztec and Native Americans have a story about the rabbit on the moon although what it is pounding is different depending on the story.
