Epilogue

Three Days Later . . .

“You remember the number?”

“Yes, Sa’.”

“And you’re gonna call, right?”

“Yes, Sa’”

“And when you gonna call?”

That stopped him. Okay, well, they had only practiced this spiel for a while now, so a little hang-up at the end was okay. Sam leaned over and whispered.

“Call anytime, just ask Annie first. Right?” Bobby nodded, his head still firmly tilted as he stared into the distance. Sam grinned, then looked up at Dean. His brother rolled his eyes, but the hesitation and the twinkle he saw there first told him he was just a little fond of Bobby too.

There was a lump in his throat as he pushed forward, wishing that Bobby might look him in the eye.

“So, do I get a hug before we . . . oooomph!” Bobby cut off his request with a quick dive to his still slightly tender mid-section. He smiled. Now this was what made all this crap worthwhile. Bobby curled into him, and the warmth he felt wasn’t just from the small body there. He was gonna miss this little guy.  He tentatively put his arms around the little form, and when there was no swift reaction, he hugged him close.

Bobby let him: For just a minute, before growling. Then,  with a smile, the little man backed away a couple steps. One hand found his way up to mess with his hair. With a grin, he flicked his eyes to meet with Sam’s for just a moment. Deep, hidden secrets seemed buried there. And all too quickly, the boy pulled his gaze away, and the secrets there stayed hidden.

He lifted his gaze to Annie, surprised when he found she was holding something out to him. She grinned, looked around his shoulder to meet Dean’s gaze, and then down to glance at her brother.

“Bobby and I just wanted to send you guys on your way with some goodies. So there’s a couple sandwiches for later. And, um, a bunch of chocolate chip cookies.” She pulled a cooler out from behind her back. She gave Dean a knowing look before handing that, too, to Sam. “I made a fresh batch of Chili, for when you guys stop off. And there’s a few other things in there for you guys to munch on.” She looked down at Bobby and nudged him, grinning broadly at Dean as her brother moved his way. “Bobby wanted to give you something himself. He picked them out.”

Sam stood on tiptoes to make out what Bobby was tentatively holding out to his brother, and he grinned as he caught sight of it: A big yellow package of Dean’s favorite treat. Grinning, Dean leaned down to take the package from Bobby, who was carefully looking over the bigger man’s shoulder. He patted his jacket pocket. His gift from Bobby rested safely there.

“Thanks, there, Bobby. You know, these are my favorite.” Bobby surprised the hunter, pushing forward gently to impress a quick hug against him. Then he turned and ran back to stand by his sister. Dean looked up a moment later, standing and meeting Sam’s eyes. Sam ducked his head, a small grin playing on his lips. His brother was a softie in disguise. “Annie, you got our numbers, stay in touch.”

He opened the squeaky door and dropped inside the car quickly. Sam turned to face the Carvers.

“Thanks a lot Annie. Bobby . . . I’m gonna miss you, little guy.” Bobby’s small grin told him he was listening, even though he was staring at something fascinating in the sky. He stepped forward. Annie leaned towards him and gave him a quick hug. “Take care of yourself, Annie. Watch that little guy close - keep him out of trouble there.”

He grinned deeply, amused when she reached down to play with her brother’s hair, only to be rebuffed with a small growl, before Bobby turned to head into the house. He stopped, though, and stood just behind Annie instead, rocking on the balls of his feet.

“I always do, Sam.” She grinned at him, reaching behind her to tease her brother with a reaching hand. “I always do.”

He nodded, looking down for a second to collect himself. Then he turned and negotiated his long form into the Impala.

“Ready to go Sammy?”

“Yeah.” But he didn’t look at Dean. Instead his gaze was focused on those haunting eyes of Bobby’s, as he suddenly met them with startling clarity. He blinked, and again the gaze had shifted. Staring out the side window, he felt his brother’s gaze rest on him for a moment, before the loud rumble of the Impala signaled the end of yet another job.

He couldn’t help but feel a little differently at the end of this one, though.

Dean turned the radio up, the melody mixing with the roar of the engine to serenade them out of town.  His hand snuck inside his jacket pocket to play with the book there.

Sam grinned lazily, staring out the window. For once, his thoughts came to an all-stop and he relaxed into the seat, letting the world fly by.

Him and his brother, against the world. Life couldn’t get any sweeter.
