[Today, Fran is sitting on the edge of a skyscraper, hands behind him, surrounded by apples and apparently not caring that he's thousands of feet about the ground. He stares up at the sky, apathetic as ever. It's grey, as per usual, beams of sunlight casting down on the entire city, illuminating the tops of lower buildings. The view is really quite ( Read more... )

I would wish you a happy anniversary, Fran, but it does not seem that you find it so. But I am glad that you and I could meet in this place, even if it is not the most ideal of circumstance.

[In more somber tones.]

If indeed we are heading toward, 'the end', as you say, there is little that we may do to prevent it. We must pray and accept such a fate with dignity, must we not? I do not like to think that this is the afterlife - it is not at all how Heaven or Hell are described.

[And more cheerful.]

Are the apples not delicious? We should take advantage of the bounty we have this week, and enjoy it while it is here.

....Juliet isn't that bad, compared to most people here, I guess.

[This means he likes her, certainly.]

Ah, if you want to slow the process, I guess. Really, I think it's just a choice of how fast we want the end to come.

They are quite nice, yes. [He takes a bite from another one.]

[She smiles.]

That is kind of you to say, Fran.

If it is possible to slow the process, I should like to. But I do not think that we have a say in it, one way or another. But I should like the chance to live my life and enjoy it fully.

[He doesn't smile back, but he looks less dour than before.]

It's just the truth.

Juliet really is an optimist, isn't she. Being happy even when she's sort of like a prisoner.

I see little point in focusing on the negative when there are so many positive things to think on. I may be a prisoner of sorts here, but I have more freedoms than I did at home, in my father's house.

[That earns her an interested look.]

What was your father like, if he's worse?

Father is very protective of me. I am his only child, and a daughter, so he feels it his duty to keep me safe until he can see me happily married to a man of his choosing. I am not allowed to go out unescorted, and even then, there are few places I may go in the city itself - "it is too dangerous for a girl of your age" he will say. And his idea of a suitable husband leaves much to be desired - the man he chooses is twice my age. He is closer in age to Mother than to me! And though he is nephew to the Prince, he has little wit or intelligence.

...

Mm, so the classic story book father. At least you don't have him here.

If storybook fathers are all like mine, it is little wonder the maidens in tales get lured away into the woods or tricked - they are too sheltered to see what is and is not safe at times.

For all that I am glad of my freedoms here, I do miss him. He is my father, and I love him dearly. And I would hope that he would be proud to see me thriving in this place, rather than wilting.
