ok should probably post an update....
rio was really awesome. was there for almost six weeks and during that time i made some really good friends, laid on the beach and drank endless caipirinhas, climbed a few mountains, rode the gondola up another couple, did some climate modeling, blah blah. met a really cool girl there too...
shari showed up and we immediately dragged her out dancing, which she loved. it rained for a lot of the time she was in rio but she still got some beach time in.
then all the kids from the course left...kind of a bummer cause they were really fun (i still don´t know how such a group was assembled by picking from applied math majors and minors...dang.) i´ll see a lot of them in seattle though before i move.
after rio we headed to curitiba to meet shari`s e brazilian lover but he ended up standing us up. the little bastid. the city was really nice though (of the cleanest in s. america, and also and urban planner's wet dream.)
then we hit iguazú falls, which is truly a sight. í´m not all that into waterfalls but that bastard puts niagra to shame on so many levels. and i ramped up my spanish studies...in brazil i knew fuck all but now that we are in argentina i can get around, but i hope to improve a lot in the next couple of months.
then we hopped a bus across the chaco desert to salta, argentina (far NW of argentina, in the foothills of the andés.) it is beautiful here and ridiculously cheap. like, crazy cheap. tomorrow we are going to hop a bus 3 hours south to cafayete which is a little more in the mountains and is famous for its wineries. we´ll investigate that....
i am really itching to do some more hiking and climbing though, and to get up into the mountains... i´ll keep ya posted. dunno if skiing will work out though since we aren´t going to be down near mendoza for another week or two and they didn´t have a great snow year.
