It had been almost a year since the entire ordeal with the boat and Nate getting arrested. At first he thought he was trying to get better, but really he was just trying to get Sophie to think he was. It took longer than that

Sophie got Nate's call and frowned a bit. She wasn't sure why something would be sent to Nate's place, but she started to make a detour and head over to his place. When she got there, she knocked on the door lightly.
"Very funny," she said with a glare, before making her way over to the package. She looked it over for a moment, before opening it, pushing through the packing materials until she got to what was inside. When she saw it, she froze for a moment, pushing back the tabs on the box and just staring at it.
He might not have looked up when she came in, but when she headed towards the package he turned to watch her from behind. Not necessarily for the angle, but because he could watch her without her seeing.
She didn't respond at first. She pulled the statue out of the box and let it rest on the counter, just staring at it as one hand came up to cover her mouth. She was trying not to get emotional about this -- not in front of him -- but death tends to have that effect on someone.
He also didn't want to press too hard. He was still working on the her not hating him thing. So he nodded slowly and reached for her elbow. "Then...come sit down."
She let him guide her back to the couch, sitting down and burying her face in her hands, trying not to make this too emotional. This wasn't the blow she needed today, and she didn't know how to deal with it.
He sat beside her, unsure what was going on, and treading carefully. He kept quiet for a moment, before sighing and reaching out to her. His hand hesitated in the air for a moment, before brushing her hair away from her face. He kept himself from saying her name again. Or her not-name.
It took her a minute, but eventually she started to uncoil a bit. "That statute is from a friend of mine. The only way I was supposed to get it, is upon her death."
She wanted to lean into the hand, but instead she pulled away, tucking her hair behind her ear, and leaning back into the couch. "I'm fine, Nate. Really. Just ... needs some time to get used to."
"Nate. It's me."

He frowned when he saw her freeze.
"Something wrong?"

"Oh, Bela."

He moved over to her, worried instantly. He glanced at the statue and tried to figure out what it meant. "Sophie.." he said gently.

"Okay," he nodded. "If you're sure." But he still watched her carefully, with his big worried eyes.
