Kapcon the Second

So, on to the second day.

I didn’t submit any game choices over the con - just turning up and seeing who still had space at the end - thinking I could just wander into GoD room if I was feeling lonely. When I got there at the beginning of Round 4, Tali was in search of players for her Hats Theatre, so I found myself whisked off to an impromptu theatre troupe meeting where we were given a scenario (classic fantasy/political setting with a murdered king, a young heir and a scheming uncle) and told just to run with it. The game relied entirely on the players for direction, plot and conflicts, with the players playing the PCs and NPCs and Tali occasionally interjecting to push the game one way or another or explain certain boundaries/rules. In the end we defeated Duke Gold (Frank, prompted by Tali to reveal something we didn’t know said, “Then, finally my nephew and I will rule as Queens of the Land!”) and place the wise Prince (played by Naomi and a bit cleverer then the rest of us) on the throne at the head of a Constitutional Monarch. I think that some people didn’t enjoy the entirely freeform style, but I love that shit so awesome for me.

Next round, Bruno’s Dying Earth game, The Esqualment of Lhask, needed another player, and it was yet another rare opportunity for me to play in a game with old friends (Bruno and John [and Naomi but I’d played with her relatively recently]). For those of you who haven’t played DE before, it’s a game of vices and ridiculous banter, where the plot is far less important then making the other players look bad and you look good. It was pretty fun, although I felt Bruno needed a bit more work on getting everyone involved. There was plenty of wordplay to be had and we even started to move the plot along right at the end of the game. I’ve always felt a bit nervous about this game since I often feel my vocab isn’t up to scratch, but Bruno (and John for that matter) led us on a fun game nevertheless.

Round the 6th and I found myself with the dream team of Connan, Nick, Jenni, Margie, Tali and Giffy, playing Best Friends, facilitated by Gregor. We played 80s American Gladiators and it was awesome. I played perhaps the most oblivious and stupid character I’ve ever managed and it was generally great fun. Jenni already posted lots of great quotes from the game, so I don’t feel the need to.

At the prize ceremony, I picked up the prize for best GM in a single session. That was pretty cool but has made me think I won’t be able to just run that game again next year since I won best GM overall for the same game last year. Ah well, back to the old idea mines. Perhaps I’ll read Treasure Island some time this year. Pirates are cool.

After a bit of help tidying up, we went off to Indigo City to the post-con drinks/BBQ/spa. Norman always has people round at the end of the con, and this time he even announced it so there was no awkwardness around people not being sure if they were invited. We had good time there; lots of reminiscing and the always warm-fuzzy inducing, “My favourite part of Kapcon was…”. It was nice to hear about what a good time everyone had (even Mash!) and nice to just talk and decompress after the con. Thanks heaps to Norm for his hospitality!

All in all, great experience again and perhaps one of my best Kapcons yet.
