Elle had never felt remorse before. She toyed with people, flirted and laughed and broke the hearts of boys without much care. She had sex with Adam Monroe and then zapped him before he could get his clothes on, leaving him in his cell. And none of it bothered her. They had all been toys, things for her to play with. Gabriel though…he had been something different. He looked up her with these adoring hopeful eyes, and the way he talked about not needing to be special, just needed her, it made her heart ache. She wanted to leave the company, run away with him, because he was the first person she ever really connected with. But then she betrayed him, bringing Trevor into his home like a sacrificial lamb. And when Gabriel screamed at her with that look of betrayal in his eyes, demanding for her to get out, for the first time, she felt ashamed of what she did. And so she did the only thing she could. She ran as fast as she could, that regret burning and twisting in her chest. The next time she met an innocent boy, his name was Peter, and she promised herself that this time, it wouldn’t get personal, that he would only be a toy.
Because toys couldn’t hurt her.
