Is it too early to throw in the towel? Because the Ravens have been a HUGE disappointment this year. I remember the first game of the season, Sunday night against the Colts, how Joe Theismann and Paul McGuire were hyping the matchup between the two teams as a possible Super Bowl matchup. At 2-7, there's no chance in hell they'll make the playoffs. With still a very strong defense that is second in the league in defense (second in yards allowed, which is what they rank defenses by, even though it really doesn't make sense) once Ray Lewis and Ed Reed return from injuries, and with the the team well below the salary cap, there's a very good chance of the team coming back next year to compete.
But say they bomb the rest of the season because their offense, particularly the offensive line, is horrible (with or without Kyle Boller), and lose the remaining seven games to end the season with a 2-14 record. They'll compete with the likes of the Houston Texans and Arizona Cardinals for the number one pick draft. I can just picture it now Paul Tagliabue up at the podium announcing -with the first pick of the 2006 NFL draft, the Baltimore Ravens select...Matt Leinart of USC.
Atweek 10, it's still way too early to tell how the rest of the season will turn out, but there's nothing wrong with a little wishful thinking. And at this point, it can be the only bright side to such an abysmal season. It's been a while since I've gotten excited over what can be an early first round pick. As much as it makes me sound like I give up easily, let's hope they screw up enough to let it happen. It's Leinart we're talking about here....
