GPS purchase and software / customer suppor

Recently we went on a road trip and realized that all our maps are out of date. So I decided to investigate uploading maps to our GPS that we purchased last Christmas. Unfortunately I could not unlock the software so I decided to launch a customer support request. Here is there response to my query.
