Notes: The first story in my "Empowered" series; following Joelle and Elizabeth, the only Guthrie children so far to have reached puberty and not developed mutant powers.
Summary: Joelle is off to college.
"Sisters are doin' it for themselves!" Elizabeth caterwauled, dropping a box on the bed.
"Ugh," said Joelle, carrying in the last box and kicking the door shut behind her. "That's something I won't miss: your singing."
Elizabeth pouted. "I help you move and you insult me? Some sister you are."
Joelle grinned. "You know you're gonna miss me."
"Maybe," her sister smiled back. "Right now I'm just jealous that you've got your own room." She indicated the painted cement block walls of Joelle's tiny dorm. "Maybe a little impressed, too. You're the first Guthrie to get a higher education."
Joelle hid her blush by beginning to unpack. "Naw, Sam and Paige and all them-"
"They got into mutant school, just 'cuz they were born different," Lizzie interrupted. "You earned this, Jo. I'm proud of you."
