"Higgy?" Magnum returned from his errand and found her in his lounge.
"This," Higgins said, and Magnum heard the pause before her British politeness to company kicked back in, "gentleman, says he is a friend of yours."
The man in question lifted one hand from where he was sprawled in a chair. He had a glass of what looked like scotch in it, the amber liquid sloshing from side to side. "Tommy!" he called. His British accent was utterly unlike the polished tone Higgins possessed.
Higgins raised an eyebrow at the nickname.
"John Constantine," Magnum said. "It's been a while. How are you?"
"No point complaining," John said. "Not as good as you by the looks of it."
Higgins cleared her throat. "I did explain that you are merely a guest of Robin Masters." She nodded. "I'll leave you boys to talk. Nice to meet you, Mr Constantine."
"Pleasure was mine, love." John watched her leave before he turned his attention back to Magnum. "I like her. Though she was quite adamant I wasn't allowed to smoke in the house." He gestured to the cigarette tucked behind his ear.
"You know those things will kill you?" Magnum said, taking a seat near John.
"Wouldn't be the first time I've died." John drained his glass. "Anyway, I came to ask a favour."
"I do owe you. I mean, I don't believe in the occult but I do know you did what you promised." He'd asked nothing of Magnum except to say that one day he might need help in return.
John nodded. "I'm here to retrieve an artefact which I believe to be hidden somewhere on this island paradise. That you're here seems... serendipitous. There are no coincidences in my line of work. And you are a private dick."
"I prefer investigator," Magnum said automatically.
"I bet," John said, with a laugh. "So, are you up for some relic hunting?"
"Any day of the week. But do you mind if I get Kumu?"
John shrugged. "Whatever a Kumu is, if you think it will help."
"She," Magnum said, "is an expert in all things historical on the island, and knows more than anyone about the folklore and mysterious goings on. More than me, anyway."
"More the merrier," John said.
Magnum went to fetch Kumu, pausing at the doorway. "No smoking! Higgins will kill us both."
John, who'd moved the cigarette to his mouth, sighed and moved it back again.
One hour later Kumu had correctly identified a particular cave, where John recited a few words and then pointed to a rock near the back. Beneath this was the artefact.
"I wish all cases were this easy to solve," Magnum said as he drove John to the airport.
"Ah, maybe we'll cross paths again soon and thing won't be so quickly resolved. I wouldn't have minded getting to know Higgins better," John said. "And thank Kumu for me."
Magnum promised to do so. He left the airport certain, for some reason, that he and John Constantine would meet again sooner rather than later.
