So, what's the word on the street?  What's hip, what's hot, what's happening?  More to the point, how's your writing going?

Batman's really scary to write, I've found. Maybe I should push sasha_anu's essay on writing Bruce up. :)

On the plus side, there are few characters who've been written with such huge variations in canon! Is he a psychopathic man who kidnaps small children and makes them eat rats? Or is he a caring rather who checks up on his foster-kids and supports them? That's ASBAR and Nightwing in current canon, both of them in relation to Dick, no less. I mean, if you're somewhere between those two extremes you match canon.

Now, I'd say writing a Batman that works for fanon is a trickier business, and I do think that no matter how you write Batman you just have to accept that it's going to turn off some number of your readers. Some people like him cuddly and affectionate once he falls in love, some like him pretty sane, some people like him as a completely round-the-bend mind-fucking control freak. I think part of the panic writing Batman is knowing that everyone has a pretty certain image of him and you're just not going to match everyone's ( ... )

As long as there is a logical reason for Bruce's actions that doesn't require a map and compass for the reader to get there, I'm sure that you'll do fine.

You know, I think that's one of the best single pieces of advice I've ever seen on writing Bruce. The man's a thinker, not an impulsive guy...as long as you can give some reason (even a rationalization!) that makes some sense, he'll be pretty close to in-character. The one thing he doesn't usually do is act without thinking.

*is happy with her choice on writing Bruce essay*

We have to start making a solid date for that, by the way. I've been holding it in reserve, but the character studies are so plentiful and people love writing them so much that there's unlikely to be a blank spot! When I get home and have my planner available again we'll start planning. :)

I have to admit that I'm getting a little antsy about my essay and I have to keep restraining myself from making modifications to it. lol

LOL, because I have it on Google Docs I can see when you've been taking it out and shifting stuff around a little. :) Okay, when I get home I'll give you a definite date...Bruce really shouldn't be put off for too long...

To say nothing of the Queen of Evol.

there's really nothing wrong with my essay, other than this feeling that I have that I'm not actually telling anyone anything and this pressing need to add examples of the good and the bad to the document.

Good examples are great! Bad examples...well, it won't be of anyone who might come across it, will it? You can use mine if you like...I've written so much Bruce that I can probably survive being told some moments are out of character (just no, "This whole arc? Terrible!" please!)

I'll either A) link to the good and make up the bad or B) make up the good and the bad.

*wipes brow* Saved!

Sounds good to me!
