“The point is to bring you two together! Why did you do that?!”
Kame heard YamaPi’s voice as soon as he opened his eyes to the warm lighting of his living room. He was on his couch and hovering over him was an irate-looking idol, which of course was not the real YamaPi.
After a few moments wherein Kame merely stared back, the fairy’s expression softened a bit and he spoke again, “So… how did the kiss feel?”
Kame almost fell off his seat, but failed to reply once more, so that the fairy turned serious again.
“You do realize that, by doing what you did, you made things a million times harder for you, right?” YamaPi sat down on another couch and Kame gulped at the gravity in the man’s look and voice.
“I must warn you that in the next picture, things have become extremely awkward and uncomfortable for Akanishi and your - ”
“But how have we been since - uhm - since the kiss?” Kame just had to ask.
“You never talk off cam. You never hang out again.”

Kame shifted nervously in his spot on the bed. This particular memory was very awkward, even without the redone details of the past. Even without that kiss.
“Everyone on standby!” the director called, just as Akanishi sat back on the bed beside him.
Their eyes never met, with Akanishi’s fedora low almost upon his eyes. Kame looked down and busied himself with arranging the bracelets on his wrist, and he felt Akanishi shift in his spot, too.
In a few moments, the cameras would resume rolling and they would be required to talk to their guests and between the two of them, too, and act like everything was alright, throwing some harmless jokes like they were real good friends.
Well, Kame would like to believe that, if they had anything in the past at all, it was real friendship. He would not blame himself if he effectively ruined it with a hug - or a kiss this time around - because way before that, Akanishi had become distant. Perhaps Kame was a bit at fault because he did not understand the older man, but he wished Akanishi just as well made effort to be understood.
“So… how are you?”
Akanishi raised his gaze to meet Kame’s, and the younger man willed himself not to look away. It has been about a year since they last exchanged any words not scripted for any show. Kame wished Akanishi would understand what it meant to him for the older man to just… show some signs of being okay.
Okay about the two of them.
Akanishi seemed rather dazed that Kame had initiated conversation. From what Kame could remember, he had practically forced himself to ignore Jin just as well as the other man did to him. Somehow, after that night a year ago, they had tried to figure out their place in each other’s life without ever really validating it with the other, and so they ended up building this invisible wall between them.
It was easier to ignore everything.
“Oh, I’m fine, how about you?” Kame, receiving no reply, decided to answer his own question, so that Akanishi’s expression turned bewildered. “I’m great! It has been a while, hasn’t it? Yeah, that’s right,” Kame rambled on, fixing his vest around him now.
A few awkward moments later, Kame finally heard a soft chuckle escape the older man’s lips. Kame looked back at Jin, and found a smile - the first genuine one he’d seen in about a year at that time - on the man’s face. Kame forced himself to hold back a sudden surge of emotion and just smile back.
It has been ages since he had seen Akanishi genuinely smile because of something of his doing. It has been so long since he felt that they were even at least friends. But Kame could not blame himself for that night. And now that he got to relive it, he could not blame himself for that kiss either. He did not think his mind could afford to go on a guilt trip.
But perhaps, he could blame himself for falling in love with Akanishi Jin.
“It has been a while, ne…” Jin muttered beside him, face again hidden by the fedora that cast a shadow over his face.
Kame realized he could not think of a reply to that, even if he had said it himself moments ago. What now? Was he just going to tell Akanishi out of the blue that he was in love with him? This setting was impossible. What was the fairy thinking, sending him to this particular picture? Was he supposed to confess with all the cameras and staff shuffling around them? Was that going to be their first conversation topic after ignoring each other for a year? Kame was sorely tempted to punch himself.
The on-set makeup artist approached them with a strangely familiar expression on her face. She made final touches on Kame’s makeup first, and then moved over to Akanishi. In the past, Kame could vaguely remember Akanishi talking to this woman after the shoot.
Well, whatever. Kame did not want to care too much now. He was not going to be able to confess here, and so he did not want to cause any more trouble for himself. He had wasted this chance, in his opinion, more deliberately than all the others, but he would not call it a failure just as well.
On this day, after a year or so, Akanishi had smiled because of him. Kame hated to think that that was the last time he would ever make his old friend and one true love smile, but he would be keeping the image of that face in his memory forever.
Becky and the Joyman duo sat back down opposite them, and Kame closed his eyes for a brief moment. In the past, at the end of this take, he made a non-scripted joke about asking Akanishi to hold hands.
“Ready in 5… 4… 3…” the director called out again.
The look on Jin’s face then was priceless. Now, Kame understood why he made that joke to begin with.
