Rainbow Cafe (Chapter 2)

Apr 11, 2009 22:18

“Well by that time, the doughnuts were already on fire so we had to get the fire extinguisher…”

Yasu had been talking to the regulars in the café for almost half an hour. It had gotten to the point where Subaru contemplated dragging him back to the counter, but even though the thought came to his mind almost every shift, he never managed to go over and actually conduct it. Yasu managed to bring a smile to every customers face and neither Okura nor Subaru could take blame for putting an end to Yasu’s great talent.

When the small man finally made his way back to the tills the other two were staring at him blankly. Without any indication Yasu could tell exactly what was bothering them both. He shuffled his feet and blushed, and the grin that been spread around the café’s customers beamed at them gallantly. “You two are just jealous!”

“Of what?” Subaru asked angrily.

“Of me!” Yasu squealed back.

“Why would I be jealous of you?!” Subaru mumbled.

“Because you are!”

“You don’t put up much of an argument Yasu.” Subaru warned. He turned to the counter and changed his expression from somewhat serious to carefree and friendly in a matter of milliseconds. “Hello! What would you like to order?”

The tall businessman was about to open his mouth to make an order when suddenly a loud and high pitched squeal interrupted him.

“You didn’t do it right! He totally knows it’s fake.”

Subaru’s smile dropped and his eyes widened in what could only be described as complete and utter embarrassment.  He cleared his throat and attempted to smile again.

“Please ignore him.” Subaru said to the confused business man, “He’s small, he doesn’t understand what he’s talking about.”

“You’re small!” Yasu cried. At this, Subaru flinched. “And you don’t know what you’re talking about! You sound like one of those robot voices you get on games or in airports or…”

“Okura!” Subaru called without moving a muscle or changing his expression, “Take him away!”

Even though Okura was rather hesitant about grabbing his smallest companion, he did as he was told and pulled Yasu back by his apron. This action caused Yasu to squeal in shock and fight back against Okura’s hold.

“Yeah, yeah I get it I’m going already!” Yasu cried. His words described irritation but his voicing expressed amusement at his own failure. He seemed to roll across Okura to get to the coffee machines, which made the taller man jump away at the touch.

“What’s up Tacchon?” Yasu asked as he grabbed a jug from the shelves on the back wall. Okura shrugged casually and composed himself. “Don’t worry; we don’t have long until we can go home.”

“True.” Okura sighed. He wiped his face down and started cleaning the already dirty tables closest to the counter. He didn’t always react in that way to Yasu, but on the off chance that he remembered just how ‘strange’ he felt around him he would over-react and do something really stupid. He cast his mind back to the night he jumped back and knocked over a huge jar of coffee; it took ages to clean up and it was a terrible waste of coffee. Subaru’d had fun telling him off, but thankfully there was no questioning to why Okura had jumped back in the first place - it was put down to his natural clumsiness.

Thank god for that. He thought to himself thankfully.

Eventually their shift came to an end. They started at 4 and finished at 11, and at that point they would close the shop and make their way home. Recently, their boss had spoken about keeping the café open overnight to see how business went. It was now a fear that they all shared; having to work over-night shifts and becoming nocturnal.

“What if you forgot what sunlight looked like?” Yasu asked as they pulled down the shutters of the café. Subaru slammed the first shutter down and stared at Yasu in amazement.

“You actually think that would happen?” He laughed. “Why would you forget what sunlight looks like? Have you forgotten what the moon looks like because you sleep at night?”

“No!” Yasu moaned, “But it would happen! Especially if you had a really bad memory! And it was winter!”

“The worst thing would be having to sleep while it’s sunny.” Okura sighed as he dreamily pulled down another shutter that was too tall for the others to reach. “It would be sad.”

“The sun always gives me energy.” Yasu pondered, “Does that mean I’d just never sleep?”

“No.” Subaru replied matter-of-factly.

“Well I guess you’re right…” Yasu sighed as he wandered down the dark street. Subaru chuckled and followed him closely. Okura finished locking the shop and turned to watch the two other men walk away together. Normally the night sky and the cold air made Tacchon think quite pessimistically, and tonight was no different. He knew that at any other time in the day he wouldn’t feel so bad, but in a strange way he wanted to sulk, he wanted to moan and he definitely wanted to go home and sleep due to sadness.

Am I just too young to get it yet? Okura wondered. They’re so close and I can’t bring myself to be too close to Yasu. I’m never going to be like them.

“Oi!” Yasu shouted from down the street. “Why are you standing there? You’re being useless again! And you’re in that old man’s way!”

Okura quickly jumped to the side and watched as an old man shuffled past him, grunted, and meandered over the road. Okura watched while skimming his teeth with his tongue. He couldn’t say that the old man didn’t annoy him; he’d been rather ignorant of everyone else’s existence until Yasu had pointed him out. Okura found his legs walking over to Subaru and Yasu despite feeling a need to get away.

Aww now I feel invasive. He moaned in his mind. Wouldn’t they like to be alone? They probably want me to go away right now…

“Tacchon! Stop thinking too much!” Yasu cried yet again. “Use those long legs! Walk! Walk!!”

“Come on Okura! You can do it!” Subaru laughed as he slapped his knees as if he were calling for a dog. Once Okura finally got to them Subaru patted him on the head and Yasu patted his shoulder. “Well done! You made it!”

“Go Tacchon!” Yasu cried. They continued to walk down the street, but Okura couldn’t help feeling out of place. He just wanted to go home and moan to himself. Maybe he’d be saner the next day? “Tacchon you want to come round mine for a bit?”

He suddenly tripped up.

“Oh no, no, no, it’s ok, I don’t feel so good I have to go home…”

Subaru and Yasu watched Okura like he was an alien. He knew he was making matters worse, but he couldn’t help literally falling over whenever Yasu mentioned anything that seemed the least bit caring. They were already at the point where their paths separated and Okura was pretty desperate to leave.

“Ok Okura, you get rest, at least you’re not going home to a bunch of loons.” Subaru muttered. “See you tomorrow!”

“Get better soon Tacchon.” Yasu patted him on the back and gave him one last smile before leaving down the other road with Subaru. Finally Okura was left alone to walk back home and think to himself silently.

He held his head back and stared at the dark sky. Was he really so head over heels for Yasu? It was such a strange thing to think that sometimes he wondered if it was ok to think such things, but of course it was, it was his mind after all.

But Yasu was so cute and happy and cheerful… he was also very modest about everything he did, and he always had a different yet flexible view on every situation. Ok he had his annoying moments but it was only ever if Okura was in a bad mood himself. There were no faults on Yasu. He was great.

Okura groaned. No one should be so perfect! He decided that the next day he would try and find out exactly what his feeling for Yasu were. He stamped his foot and declared a mini announcement in his mind.

Tomorrow… tomorrow… He gulped and closed his eyes. Tomorrow I will buy gay porn! I will find out whether I’m gay or not! I will do this for the sake of my future! For my family! For my friends!

The next day, after school, Okura set out on his hunt for the said ‘porn’. He made special precautions to make sure that no one followed him, but despite his strict hiding and quick feet he couldn’t be sure he was completely alone…

Just walking down the street felt nerve wracking. It seemed like everyone was looking at him and knew exactly where he was going. Okura glared at every man and woman in his path just in case they had special psychic abilities. After all, he couldn’t be too careless could he?

Thankfully the shop was close and was quite out of the way from the busy streets. Okura decided that it was a splendid location for a porn shop; down a street that resembled a dark alleyway with small almost illegible signs on the window.

Okura wasn’t exactly ‘inexperienced’ in the usage of porn, after all he was a teenager with needs and desires. The difference between what he did at home and what he was doing that day was that at home he could safely download something nice and ‘straight’ to watch or buy some harmless magazines from the shop round the corner from where he lived. The visit to the shop was rather daunting to say the least; he’d never bought anything so hardcore or so homosexual from a shop before… what if the guy at the till judged him?

Nah of course he wouldn’t; he would serve loads of people who wanted the same stuff. Then again the slightest giggle or chuckle from the shop would probably cause him to leave.

He’d finally arrived after a rather traumatic journey. He’d been tottering around on his toes like a secret agent, trying to keep his dangerous mission as secret as possible from ordinary members of the public. After hiding behind rubbish cans, flower pots, poor pedestrians and at desperate times even lampposts, he was stood outside a rather empty looking shop with nothing more to do than turn the handle and enter it at his own risk.

I can do this. He thought to himself, closing his eyes and pursing his lips. Loads of people will buy this stuff! And I’m only doing it this once! I never have to go back…

He flexed his neck, said his goodbye’s to the world he was leaving and began turning the rusty doorhandle…

“Yoo-hoo~!” Called a loud and familiar voice from afar. Okura cringed, he knew just who that camp, high pitched voice belonged to.

His neighbors, Akanishi Jin and Yamashita Tomohisa, came strolling up to him with wide grins on their faces. To any other person they would look like 2 average young men taking a walk in the city, but Okura knew them as his gay next door neighbors who loved nothing more than to torture him. They would act casually with anyone else, but when they were with Okura they would do their best to be as camp and fluffy as possible… unless they wanted something from the ladies of the estate. If anything was missing from the apartment they would put on the ‘romantic’ act and the women, especially Okura’s mother, would work head over heels to make sure they got what they wanted.

“What are you doing around these parts sweet pea?” Yamashita Tomohisa asked as he quickly grabbed his partners arm and linked it with his own. It was at this point that Akanishi seemed to jump into action, realized what was going on, and grinned evilly. Okura felt his knees knock together. He was well and truly busted this time, and neither of the two were known to keep secrets. He tried to form a sentence but found himself babbling nonsensically.

“I… I err… I got lost! I decided to ask the nice porn people for… directions…” The looks the two men were giving him showed just how convincing his act was - not at all. “Ok! Ok… just don’t tell my parents ok?!”

“Tadayoshi!” Akanishi gasped more in amusement than horror, “Have you joined our ranks?!”

Okura gave him a blank look and blinked a few times.

“Your ranks?” He asked placidly. “What, you guys think you are above me because you’re gay?”

“It’s more than just being gay Tatsu.” Yamashita sighed and placed a hand on his shoulder. Okura watched the hand nervously and grumbled.

“It’s Tadayo…”

“We’re smarter, older, far more creative, far more emotional, twice as attractive…” After this list Yamashita seemed to have run out of things to say. He bit his lip and pondered for a while longer, “Healthier… smarter… you know!”

“I’m sure.” Okura grunted as he narrowed his eyes. “Look, I know you guys find it difficult to keep your mouth shut, but could you please not tell anyone I was here? I’m going home.”

Just as Okura was about to leave the couple alone, he felt a hand grab his shoulder and pull him back. Akanishi was staring sort of ‘hungrily’ at him, which put Okura on edge big time.

“You haven’t gone into the shop yet Tatsu.” Akanishi reminded. He lingered around Okura’s neck and breathed lightly on his skin. Okura froze in fright, wondering whether he was supposed to find this action seductive or vampiric. “Are you starting to feel a little more… curious?”

Jin’s hand roamed around Okura’s school shirt, and his lips were almost touching his cheek. Before he could pull away the older man quickly squeezed Okura’s ass and closed the gap between lip and skin. Okura jumped back rapidly and the two men howled in laughter, obviously finding Okura’s embarrassment and awkwardness hilarious. “What’s with the coldness?! What do you think I’m going to do, bite?”

“Maybe…” Okura mumbled

“Come on Jin…” Yamashita warned. He pulled his partner back and smiled sweetly at him, “You don’t want Tatsu to get upset do you?”

Jin shook his head and let Pi caress his face like he was his pet dog. Okura rolled his eyes and backed away from the scene, but before he could do so Jin had caught him yet again and pulled him back by the torso.

“Oh no you don’t!” Jin cried, but not as loud as Okura’s cry as he was grabbed around the waist. “Are you going in the shop or aren’t you?”

“I was but I’m not anymore!” Okura cried as he struggled to get out of Jin’s strong grasp. Yamashita chuckled and got closer to the younger man’s face.

“Oh so you were going in?” He laughed, “Not getting directions then?”

“Look you guys, it’s a far more complicated matter than just buying porn for the thrill of it ok? It’s serious business!”

“Who said porn wasn’t serious business?!” Akanishi whined. “Think about all those porn stars out there who work all night for your enjoyment!”

“Jin you’re not helping.” Yamashita warned.

“Sorry Pi…” Jin whispered.

“Anyway, why don’t you tell us what your business is then?” Pi asked, “You seem pretty nervous about walking into that shop, if you’d like… I could give you some of our stuff?”

Okura gulped. Some of their stuff? Could he ever watch it without seeing… without thinking… eww! He shook the thought out of his head and focused. No Tacchon! This is the best offer you’re going to get!

“Ok… please…”

“Well then what’s the problem Tatsu?” Yamashita asked curiously. “There’s no porn without some kind of confession!”

Jin tickled Okura and made him squirm. He cackled as he did so, and the evil pair waited patiently for a response from the poor teenager.

“Ok…” Okura sighed. He closed his eyes and gulped. It was the first time he’d ever told the story aloud, and he could tell it wasn’t going to be easy. “There’s this guy…”

“School? Work? Childhood friend?” Jin cried wildly. Pi slapped him around the head and gestured for Okura to carry on.

“Well… you guys wouldn’t know him, but I work with him. He’s called Yasu and he’s sweet and caring and happy and… well he’s just… Will you just let me have the porn now!?”

“Why do you want the porn?” Yamashita asked as if he were ushering Okura’s story along. Okura rolled his eyes.

“I want it to see if I am actually gay or not.” He hissed. The two men lowered themselves so that they could hear Okura’s suddenly quiet voice, “I’ve never liked another guy before, and recently I haven’t liked any girls either! I need to find out for sure ok? So shh!”

Yamashita pulled back and nodded seriously. He looked to the sky and saluted.

“Ok. This sounds like a mission.” He announced. Okura slapped his forehead and sighed. Why did I have to get the most over-dramatic gay couple to help me out?

Jin let go of Okura, almost dropping the poor guy on the floor, and joined Pi in a spot of saluting. “We shall find out Tatsu’s sexuality, no matter what! We will climb every obstacle, kill anything that gat’s in our way! Devour…”

“Ok I get it!” Okura cried in an attempt to shut the two men up. He turned around and finally made his way to his apartment, “Can we just go home now?”
