HEY GUYS!!!!! So this is the first entry and I'm going to start off by giving an overview of what happened in my opinion. So the beginning was a little hard to get into because the author was just telling us what each man carried; physically and mentally. But one problem I ran into was I had a hard time remembering who was who? Anyways as the story went on I learned more about the relationship between Jimmy and Martha. And my first impression was, "Wow this guy seems like a stalker who’s obsessed." But as I went on I still thought he was obsessed but as for the "stalker" title I think he's just very much in love with her. Then you later find out that Ted Lavender gets shot in the head and dies instantly. Before Ted was shot Jimmy was of course day dreaming about Martha. So he wasn't paying attention when he was shot. And even before that he was still daydreaming about her when a tunnel collapsed and two men were buried alive. These two things both occurred when Jimmy wasn’t paying attention and because he is the Lieutenant he is supposed to be in charge and if he had been paying attention maybe Ted wouldn’t be dead right now. As the days go on Jimmy feels guilty and feels that Ted’s death was entirely his fault. So in response to this he burns the pictures and letters from Martha. I think this was meant to be a transition, from the old “obsessed” Jimmy to the “responsible” Lieutenant Cross.
My opinion: I think Jimmy loved Martha more than anything in the world. But because she was such a distraction he lost one of his men and took all the blame for it.” Now it seems like Jimmy got a reality slap, knocked him out of his daydreams, and reminded him that he is in a war and he needs to take control of what is going on right now. And even though he loves Martha with all his heart he’s pushing her away which says to me, “I love you but I don’t want anyone to get hurt.” Because he said, “In those burned letters Martha had never mentioned the war except to say, Jimmy, take care of yourself. She wasn’t involved. She signed the letters Love, but it wasn’t love and all the fine lines and technicalities did not matter. Virginity was no longer an issue. He hated her. Yes he did. He hated her. Love, too, but it was hard, hating kind of love.” I think this is one of the heaviest things Jimmy has to carry because if you ask me one of the hardest things to do is let someone you love go because you know they will never feel the same way about you.
Questions: 1) I realize that when you’re a soldier you have to carry everything you are going to need. But is it physically possible for someone to carry that many things?
2) What was the point of cutting off the dead boys thumb?
****If you guys want to answer these in the response that would be great because I was a little confused about these.****
Well that’s all I have for now but while I was reading I found some words that were really fun to say really fast (so have fun):
1) catch-as-catch-can
2) zapped-while-zipping
3) Rodger-dodger
So thanks for checking out my journal and come check it out on Dec 14 for the next update……but especially come back on Dec 22!!!!! Bye
