So I read
this piece on hating Taylor Swift and I just had to add my 2 cents.
Look. I don’t hate Taylor Swift. She seems like a nice girl. She’s probably nice to her mom and gives hobos money and stuff. But God does she annoy the hell out of me. Do you know what it is? It’s what she represents. As a human being. It’s this idea that girls can exist as stunted girl children forever and somehow if you’re cute and young looking you can pull it off. No one will question it.
Taylor Swift is not a teenager. She isn’t Justin Beiber singing about girls at lunch and she’s not Vanessa Black and her insipid “Friday” song. She is fucking 22-years-old (not 21 as stated in the article) and she needs to grow the hell up. She and I are only separated by one year (I'm older) and if I acted the way she did, people would say things that were opposite of "oh she's so mature and poised for her age." They would say, "What the fuck? You do realize you're 24 now right? Seriously. Act your goddamned age." As a musician you make the decision to either mature and explore new horizons and grow with your audience and yourself or you decide to just keep milking the same stupid shtick you’ve been doing since you started 5 years ago and hope people keep buying it.
Well congrats Taylor Swift. You are winning at that strategy and have earned yourself two more years (at least) of behaving like a love-struck teenager. You don’t have to be an adult and behave like an adult. You can keep being awkward and self-entitled in love and you can keep believing all your exes are out to persecute you and you can keep writing songs the way rappers start turf wars via rhyme. Because I guess you don’t want to grow up. Do you know what the male equivalent of that is? The Backstreet Boys. Yeah. Think on that. If Taylor Swift continues on this current trajectory, she is going to be 37 and touring the country still trying to pretend like she's 17 crying over some guy who didn't circle "yes" on her love letter. Because that'll still be cute and not thoroughly depressing.
I mean. Honestly. To the people who consider Taylor Swift “mature for her age.” Someone actually wrote that? Are these people aware that she is only a year younger than Emma Stone and Rihanna? That she is a year older than Emma Watson? That she is pretty much a grown ass woman at this point. A grown ass woman singing songs about being in high school.
Dear Taylor Swift.
I’m not trying to crush your childlike wonder or joy for life but seriously. Grow the hell up. You can keep writing about love (everyone else on the planet does), but try to let your creative voice age and mature the way you inevitably will.
Oh and I thought I was finished but I wasn’t. Because do you know who else wrote their first hit albums at the age of 19? Alanis Morissette and Adele. Now THOSE are two chickas who were mature for their age. So fuck whoever is trying to say that Taylor Swift is so talented and mature and insightful for her age and how great it is that she wrote this perfect piece of pop art at such a young age. Because none of those things are true. Aside from being able to write a catchy tune (which both Adele and Alanis Morissette are adept at) she really isn’t as “mature” or whatever the fuck as people keep trying to say. She’s just someone who couldn’t grow past her teenage years and society has decided to give her the green light and millions of dollars to keep behaving like that’s acceptable.
