An update on things

And now a few thoughts from yours truly. Because.

- My shoulders have been really sore for the past week, mostly because I started Crossfit last week and it's been kicking my ass a little bit. It's a good thing because I want to be stronger and more fit and also not die when I climb Mt. Whitney later this year with my friend. It's a bad thing because for some reason shoulder soreness makes me really cranky. This never happened when it was just my legs. I'm a little worried I'm going to get super muscular shoulders or something and it's not like I subscribe to traditional body type aesthetics but I'd also not like for the muscles on my shoulders to encroach on my relatively short neck and make it look like I have no neck. That'd be kind of disturbing. I also feel like I need to increase my cardio regime because I don't feel like I'm improving. Even though Mt. Whitney is five or so months away I'd like to well prepared. The last thing I want is to get halfway up the mountain and realize the elevation is killing me.

- Everyone's making a huge deal out of the Hunger Games premiering this weekend. I'm really glad for a movie franchise targeted at teens that actually features a genuine action heroine (fuck you Bella Swan) but I find all this enthusiasm kind of sad. It would be nice if pundits and pop culture analysts and whatevers didn't have to point out how great this is for gender equality and how rare it is to have a female lead action film be projected to earn so much money. Sure you've got Twilight, which is "female lead" but it's not an action flick. It's about a love triangle where two dudes fight over one girl and the girl sits around and cries. Or gets kidnapped. Or is pregnant with uterus shredding spawn. It's really quite different. This is a good thing, but obviously we haven't "arrived" yet since it's still such a big deal to have a Katniss Everdeen in the movies.

- With that said, I really hope the Hunger Games is as much a roaring success as expected, and then some. This will be big for the kinds of movies that are produced afterward, the kinds of talent that will be hired, and the kinds of stories that will be told. No longer will female centric films be relegated to the wastelands of Generic Romantic Comedies or low budget Independent films. It's not the end of the revolution but it's a big step forward if it all works out. I'm going to remain optimistic, because that's the kind of person I am.

- I really need to catch up on the Walking Dead. I haven't been paying attention since the mid-season break because the characters annoyed me so much. From talking with friends and reading reviews though, apparently things really pick up in those last couple of episodes. So I'll have to get on that. Or something.

- That is if Game of Thrones Season 2 doesn't suck out all my motivation to watch anything else. I might end up just either watching that show or anticipating new episodes for the rest of the week. My addiction is that bad people. Just one more week!!

- I know I've been quiet about the return of Community but that's only because I've read so much enthusiasm over it elsewhere I feel validated enough not to have to rave about it here. Still, it goes without saying that having Greendale and its crazy characters back on my television (or LZ's rather) every Thursday is a huge relief. The producers are optimistic about Community's chances of renewal so I'm going to be optimistic too. Just one more year and then the story can be finished. One more year! Four seasons and a movie!

- The news lately has become so saturated with depressing shit that I no longer feel motivated to comment on it at length. Sometimes I post articles of interest on FB but the sheer volume of shit I come across on a daily basis has discouraged even that. For the most part. I don't really know how elections are going to pan out this November but if any of the nominated Republican candidates even loses by a close margin, I will lose faith in this country and its citizens. I don't care how much you dislike or disagree with Obama. Nothing he has done has come close to the total amount of harm the Republican party has done or attempted to do to this country and its citizens. Obama isn't perfect. Last I check Guantanamo Bay is still open and he signed a bill earlier this year to allow the detention of citizens without trial. But then you look at the kinds of laws and ideas being espoused from the GOP and Obama seems like a saint. It's sick. Can we just hit reset on this country's entire political system and start over?

- Also, the summer Olympics are in a few months. I'm super excited. I look forward to it every year and I hope Usain Bolt trained his ass off, because I expect to be entertained and amazed by his extreme super human speed. Also, the Olympics are in London this year so maybe all the telecasters will be British. Wouldn't that be fantastic?
