STUFF. and stuff.

So I've been feeling sort of stunted in the writing department as of late. I got WAY back into arts and crafts this past couple of months making a notebook for my sister and my cousin. These were two projects I'd been meaning to do for quite some time and the results, if I do say so myself, were quite satisfactory. I'll post pictures when I get ( Read more... )

I would like to see some pictures of your bookbinding projects, if you have them. I spend an hour drooling over the midori traveler's notebook the other day before realizing that it was an eminently DIY-able notebook (especially since I've had this badass vintage leather cover languishing around my room for years). But I'd like to see some of what you did before I go nosediving into a project.

I didn't bother buying the materials for a legit book making project (like with a hard spine and shit like that). I just sewed it together. You should be able to do that with leather though so long as you have a strong needle.

I wasn't sure if you did signatures (which seem like the easiest way to me), or what you used to punch the holes before you did the sewing up (because I've been using a seam ripper, which works pretty well, but I hear there are actual tools out there for people who aren't lazy like me), or whether you bothered coating the thread with beeswax before you started in on the sewing up? Because everywhere I read it's like YOU MUST DO THIS THING, and I always sit there going: "really? because that looks like a lot of time and money if you ask me."

Of course, most of this is probably just me trying to put off revising my syllabus and getting started on the reading for next week when classes start. But you never know.

And yeah, that Midori thing totally looks like something you could make yourself.

Right? I mean, it's nice looking and everything--especially once people start doing something with them. But by itself it's pretty simplistic. It's hard to believe people are willing to pay as much as they are for them.
