As a side note on Glee (because I'm listening to "Like A Prayer" again), the kid who plays Kirk has one of the purest voices ever. It's like a neutered little 10-year-old boy. The tone is so crystal clear

I don't think the "gay guy with a super high voice" thing was intentionally playing to the stereoype. I read that the actor originally auditioned for Artie, and although the directors didn't think he fit that part, they were so impressed with his voice that they decided to write in a part specifically for him, based on his personality and whatnot. So, I think that, in this case, it was just: "hey, this gay male soprano has a cool voice, so we're gonna write a gay male soprano into the show so that we can cast him."
