Into the phone the receptionist says, "Can you hang on a moment, sir?" Then, before whoever is on the other side of the line has any time to answer, she pushes the hold button. She sets down the receiver in the cradle. She sucks in a deep breath, hard.
She lifts her head and smiles. She says, "Hi," letting out her breath as she speaks.
"Hello there," I say. "How are you this fine weekday morning?"
"Today," she says, "I'm terrific. I've never been better. And you?"
I say, "Me? I'm fabulous. Life," I say," Life is all roses and sushine."
She signs my scanner. She hands the scanner and pen back to me.
When I'm walking away, right when I get to the door and start pushing, she calls over my shoulder, "What a couple of liars we are."
Then she picks up the receiver. She presses the hold button. She goes back to her phonecall, to pretending to feel terrific.
