sockpuppet gone too far

OMG, this is so sick:

Over in Doctor Who fandom, it seems like Doctor/Rose fic writer jeprdyfrndly (aka Victoria Lane-Lyton), BFF of fellow Doctor/Rose fic writer amberfocus, has a serendipitous life. She met her gorgeous husband, also a Doctor Who fan, when he saw her reading a Doctor Who book in a cafe. They had a lovely wedding (the groom's ( Read more... )

It's been happening in internet fandom for as long as I've been a part of it, which was way back in the early X-Files days. Yes, it happens often enough that this isn't unique or even that remarkable, though it's certainly very sad.

...damn. It's certainly unique and remarkable to me. I've never seen this happen before, even though I've been on the internet for over 15 years. I guess I haven't been in fandom that long enough, lol.

Consider my fandom cherry popped. :D

wow. I am apparently terribly naive to the dark under linings of fandom. This seems pretty crazy to me. As you said, a bit schizophrenic.

I know, I don't get it! These people are crazy. If you did this stuff in real life, you'd be asked to get some serious help.

It actually does happen quite a bit but I lurk on sf_drama and fandom_wank all the time, and I also am a member of fake_lj_deaths (think that's the name).

Usually it's more like, "I have cancer and need donations!" and people donate money and then find out it was a scam all along :/

Harry Potter fandom had basically the mother of all sockpuppet cases, Ms_Scribe. She had something like 40-50 sockpuppets. The Fandom Wank Wiki has a lot of the big super drama-y ones.

Here's a recent one that had me boggling. And here's a link to the Fandom Wank wiki entry on Ms Scribe...warning both of those will probably suck you in for hours. The Ms Scribe story is an epic legend around fandom_wank.

This is so common it's a fucking community?! OMG!

I just... I can't even...

You know, if you did this in real life, people would be suing you for scamming them and shit, and then you'd be asked to get some serious help right away.

But it's "on the internet" so it apparently doesn't matter...

Fucking hell.
