Help protect endangered species
[x-posted] For the most part, herps aren't the species at issue here, but as animal lovers y'all may be interested:
In response to an issue/article I mentioned in my journal the other day, Petition to stop the importation of endangered species; currently at over 18K signatures, of the goal of 20K by midnight PDT today!
Cit: The [Endangered Species Act] reflects America’s strong commitment to protecting endangered species wherever they are found. The Fish and Wildlife Service should respect that commitment, and maintain a permit policy that prohibits the importation of foreign endangered wildlife except in cases where the import serves a legitimate scientific need or contributes in a direct, substantial and verifiable way to the long-term survival of the species.

My post:
MSNBC: U.S eyes conservation law -- Greedily, I might add.
The Bush administration is proposing far-reaching changes to conservation policies that would allow hunters, circuses and the pet industry to kill, capture and import animals on the brink of extinction in other countries.
GIVING AMERICANS access to endangered animals, officials said, would feed the gigantic U.S. demand for live animals, skins, parts and trophies, and generate profits that would allow poor nations to pay for conservation of the remaining animals and their habitat.
You know, because US demand for live animals, skins, parts, and trophies really trumps the very existence of endangered species--and killing species to fund conservation of other species isn't working at cross-purposes at all. Sure.
