Chapter number 3 - Sorry.

Friday morning.

For a few days Scott managed to avoid Tessa, and he was extremely proud of himself. It was not only because of his obviously hurt man’s pride, mostly it was because of him being scared to lose control when she was so close. Though the more he avoided her, the more he realized that he couldn’t do that forever, eventually he would have to face her, pretend as if nothing had happened, put on a brave face and make it all go back to normal. That Friday morning Scott woke up with the realization that he had to stop it now. Now he was on his way to the locker room, armed with two coffees and a box of Tessa’s favorite chocolate. As he stepped inside the locker room he was greeted by a lonely Tessa who was sitting on locker room’s sofa.

“Morning, T,” Scott greeted her cheerfully as he took a seat next to her. Without hesitation he handed her the coffee and box of chocolates.

“What’s that?” Tessa looked at him with suspicion, but took the chocolates anyway. “You can keep coffee for now.”

Scott laughed, but didn’t comment. He silently watched Tessa was focused on the chocolates. Having a chocoholic as your best friend had its advantages. Whenever he did something wrong all he had to do was buy chocolate and she would be happy and forgive him for everything...well almost.

“What do you want from me, Scott?” the Canadian ice dancer finally asked, looking up at him. She waited for his response patiently as she put another sweet in her mouth.

“I wanted to apologize. I miss spending time with you, Tess.”

Tessa simply nodded, chewing thoughtfully. She was contemplating what he had just said and then...

“And what else is there? You bought me chocolate, Scott, so spill.”

Sighing Scott leaned forwards and rested his elbows on his knees. For a moment he was silent as he studied coffee cup as if it was the most interesting and fascinating thing in the world.

“Well there is something,” he finally spoke, turning his head to look at Tessa who was eating yet another sweet.

“Yes?”

“You are invited to dinner at the Moirs tomorrow night, and you have to be there. Jess is coming and she really wants to see you. Tess, please say that you will come. You can bring someone with you if you need it.”

Was he really saying that? Oh God, he would feel so sorry later if she really did bring someone with her, but right now Scott was determined to make her promise that she would come. And it was not only because Jessica wanted to see her, he was a selfish, selfish creature and he wanted her to be there more than anything.

“As a support or is this going to be a couples’ night?”

“The latter one. Danny and Charlie are coming with their women, Jessica will be there, and my mom and dad are married, I just don’t want you to feel left out.”

Tessa snorted delicately and examined the chocolate sweet which she held at her eye level between two fingers.

“Sounds like fun. Fine, I will come if you want me there, and I will take someone with me don’t worry about that.”

Tessa flashed him a grin, and Scott returned the favor. Standing up he took one sweet, ignoring Tessa’s protest.

“Thank you, T. You are a star.”

“Mine,” Tessa whined, watching as her sweet disappeared in her partner’s and best friend’s mouth.

“I bought them,” Scott reminded her and then shuddered. “God this is disgusting, so much sugar.”

Earning a weird look from Tessa, he simply shrugged, “I need water.”

With that he stepped out of the locker room, leaving Tessa alone with her chocolates.

Saturday night.

On the night of their family dinner Scott Moir found himself in his room, lying on his bed and staring at the ceiling. How was he going to do that? He didn’t want it, he was not ready. Why couldn’t he just cancel everything? Jessica would be here soon and also Tessa, and then he would be forced to face two very important women in his life with his family watching. For God’s sake, would they be able to tell that something was wrong? What if his mother saw right through him just like she always did. Last night when he had arrived she had given him a meaningful look that screamed ‘You are in  big trouble, boy!’. Groaning Scott closed his eyes, his head hurt and he really didn’t want to have that dinner because it would be a complete disaster. The pounding in his head ceased and he sighed with relief. God, give him strength.

A soft knock on his bedroom door made him open one eye and peer at the door. Whoever was there would leave if he pretended that he wasn’t there. Nodding once, he closed his eye again. Oh silence, oh heaven...knock, knock. Or maybe not. This time Scott propped himself up on his elbows and shot the door one of his best glares. Whoever was there should just go away and leave him alone, but apparently he wouldn’t have such luck. The door opened and in came his dear mother.

“Scott, Jess will be here in a moment. You should get dressed,” her loving voice filled his room, and Scott fell back on his bed and groaned once again.

“I’m dressed, mom.”

“Of course, you are, honey. The best outfit in which to welcome your guests is old sweat pants and a dirty T-shirt. I’m serious, Scott, get dressed, put on something decent and clean your room,” Alma scolded gently as she bent to pick up a lonely sock that was lying on the floor. As a response she got another groan from her son. Sighing she walked over to his bed and took a seat on the edge.

“Scotty, darling, what is going on?”

“Why don’t you tell me? You gave me that weird look last night, that ‘I-know-everything’ look.”

“I don’t know everything; in fact I don’t know anything that’s why I am asking you to tell me what exactly is going on. Before you tell me that everything is superb, please do remember that I know that something is wrong, I can feel it, mothers just have a sixth sense or something along those lines...” Even if something had gone wrong, it didn’t look like her son wanted to tell her about it, but she was his mother, he was her baby, and it was in her nature to worry about him. Reaching out, she run her fingers through her youngest offspring’s dark, messy locks. For a moment he simply refused to talk or look at her, lying on the bed with his eyes closed, but when he finally opened his eyes and turned his head to look at her she simply couldn’t read his expression. For the first time she wasn’t able to read him like an open book. His eyes were boring into her full of pain, fear and they were pleading with her. At this moment Scott reminded her of that little boy years ago who had done something wrong, and now was scared and desperate to fix it, but didn’t know how because he needed his mother’s guidance, he needed her to show him the right way out.

“I did something terrible, mom,” his voice was small when he finally spoke, and all Alma could do was to nod in encouragement.

“And it has something to do with Tessa. Actually it’s all about Tessa. We did something really bad, and I don’t know how...I can’t fix it.”

If Alma was worried before then now she was scared. No matter what they both had done it could be no good because she had never seen her youngest son so devastated. It was twice as bad now that she knew her baby Tessa was involved too. Tessa was like her one daughter to her, and she loved her endlessly. As of right now all she wanted to hear was that everything was fine with her son and her girl.

“We didn’t plan it, it just happened. We were not supposed to cross the line, but we did,” Alma’s eyes widened as she let her son continue. Cross the line? It all started to fall into places, and it really was what she thought it was then she really didn’t know what to think about it.

“Honey, is it what I think it is?”

“If you think about me and her having sex then yes,” Scott finished in a mere whisper as he squeezed his eyes shut. That was so awkward. Scott could hear his mother gasp and then silence.

“I’m  a terrible person, I know.”

Alma sighed. She didn’t want her son to think that he was a bad person because he wasn’t. She and his father had done all in their power to raise him in the best way possible, to raise him as a good man, and she was convinced that he was a good person, very good in fact just very lost and scared right now.

“You are wonderful person,” she said softly, smoothing his T-shirt over his stomach. “Darling, listen to me. I can’t say that what you did was right because it wasn’t, but what happened happened, right? You are a good boy, you care for people and all you can do right now is to find a way out of this mess by sorting things out with your both girls. Jess will be here soon and it will be your chance to try and fix everything. I can’t give you any advice because I honestly don’t know how you feel about them, but I want you to do what you feel is the best thing for you and them, but mostly for you because I love you, and I want to see you happy. Okay?”

Scott merely nodded, but it was enough for Alma, she knew that he had understood everything.

“Alright, Scott, now get up and get ready because your both girls will be here soon. And I’m serious,” with one firm nod, Alma stood up and walked over to the door. She was about to exit her son’s bedroom when a quiet voice stopped her.

“Mom, don’t tell anyone about it.”

The mother of three turned around to look at her son and nodded. Of course, she would never tell anyone, it was their secret.

“Your secret is safe with me because I didn’t have to know it for one, nor did I want to know it. Second - saying the word Sex and Tessa’s name in one sentence doesn’t seem right.”

She was glad to see his face light up as a small smile appeared on his lips.

“You didn’t think that we were still virgins, did you?”

To his question Alma simply made a face.

“Can’t a mother dream?”

Scott snorted as he got out of his bed.

“Of course, mom.”

Alma watched in silence as her son was going through his wardrobe, looking for something to wear. For some reason she knew that he would be just fine. He was a smart boy and he would do what was the best for him.

“Alright, I will leave you to it, but before I go, Scott, don’t forget about clean underwear.”

“MOM!”

Alma grinned and met her son’s shocked expression. So worth it. Can’t a mother have some fun?

“Sorry, honey, it’s just me being nostalgic. I’ll meet you downstairs in a few,” with one last encouraging smile, Alma turned around and stepped out of her son’s room, leaving him alone to get ready.
