Did my first real post-surgery gig last night. I danced a couple of weeks ago in a hafla but that was to recorded music; dancing to a band is a whole 'nother thing and takes a lot more stamina since you never really know what's going to happen. I tend to go full out more quickly and then regret it because then the band turns it up

Though on a personal level, your posts reiterates for me how lacking my bellydance education is...and how badly I need to fix that.

I am really ashamed that I have a hard time keeping all the Um Kulthoum lyrics straight in my head and I have to look them up to remember which one is which. But then I remember it's in fucking Arabic and I cut myself a little slack. But not much.

Yeah...I had to look up Um Kulthoum because I hadn't heard of them before...which made me really sad because I like them ALOT now, and what the shit did I learn in all of my bellydance classes? Because I took lots of classes. Lots!

So - anytime you want to reference stuff in your blog that I can go and look up and get myself edumacated on - I'd be ever so grateful!

Um Kalthoum is a lifetime of work all by herself. She's famous for hours-long concerts where she'd only sing the first few lines of a song -- shed just keep going over and over it, modulating the expression and the maqam (kind of like what scale it's played in) to give it different shades of meaning, and work the crowd into a frenzy. A lot of cabaret songs are little snippets of much longer pieces
