books 2007: Year of the Griffin, by Diana Wynne Jones

Yay, getting awesome books from the library. I don't think I liked this one quite as much as the first book, but this one was definitely fun and exciting.

I really like Diana Wynne Jones. I find her really entertaining. I think, though, that I've read enough of her books now to see some of the patterns in her writing. Like, every book ends with a big complex endgame that weaves together every single disparate strand and leaves each of our heroes happy and fulfilled with all of their problems solved and united with the newly-found love of their life. And it's really neat, how she does that, but she does it in every book, so you get to see it coming. Also, both this book and the previous book involved a bedraggled magical creature who ends up to be an incredibly powerful wizard who kind of saves the day. Oh, and a complete deus ex machina (in the first book, gods actually appear, and in this book, an ancient wizard emerges out of the past) who comes forth to fix everything. I enjoy her endings so much, I don't really want to see them coming. I guess I want her to find new ways of doing what she does? I don't know. This didn't detract from my enjoyment of this book, though, I swear.
