Today's Scrabble game was a welcome distraction, both from work and from other stuff. Unfortunately, the folks from the art department had a holiday lunch thing, so it was just Tariq, Christine, and I playing. I got really lucky and played really well; I am not having a good day because of the aforementioned other stuff, and I think it came out in some cutthroat Scrabbling. Anyway, I opened the board with PETAL for 14 points. In the realm of Scrabble styling, several moves I made over the course of the game turned out well. I placed PEG down from PETAL (10 points), then SPITES horizontally, forming PEGS as well and going through LAKE coming down off the L in PETAL (23 points). Then several turns later I placed SEX, forming LAKES (29 points). It was a really crowded board, not very open at all, so there were some really interesting moves going on. Some of my personal game highlights included FROSTY (24 points) and ZERO (42 points) and Q(U)IT (24 points).
It was a slow-moving game though, with just the three of us, and we got started late because of the confusion over whether the art folks would be joining us, so at 1:15 Tariq had to leave to get back to work. Christine and I continued half-heartedly for a bit until we gave up. Final score: 208. So I won, and I got the crown, but it was kind of a hollow win because we didn't have the whole group and we didn't get to play till the bitter end.
Oh, and Tariq played what he thought was a blank tile, and we didn't discover until several turns later, when I drew the real second blank, that it was actually an upside-down D. It was a complete accident but it was totally hilarious.
