I was in Boston over the weekend. It was wonderful. Now I am back in Philly, wearing too-tight gray pants at my job and surrounded by people who don't know me at all. So let's talk about Boston!
I arrived Friday night well after midnight. Sara(h) had already gone to bed, but Gregor was awake to say hi. They had made up the futon and set out towels and the parking pass and the spare key. It was very nice. I went to bed pretty much right away.
Saturday morning, I had time to say hi to Sara(h) before running out to grab a Dunkin sandwich for breakfast and make it to my hair appointment. I stopped at my favorite cute little store on Mass Ave, Joie de Vivre, and got my mom a christmas present on the way. Judy Jetson was really really busy when I got there, but it was good to see Linda and so good to get my hair cut. As Linda said while she was cutting my hair: "Your ends are like, YAY!" I really needed a haircut.
I haven't mentioned yet that Saturday was the beautifulest day I have ever seen in Boston in November. The sun was shining and it was warm and lovely out. It's like Boston stopped hating me for a day just to make me regret leaving.
After the hair appointment, I walked up to Hong Kong to meet Bobbi and Kat and Carlos for lunch. On the way, I ran into Meg! Awesome Meg, from my travel writing class! She was psyched to see me and hugged me twice and wanted to know what I was up to. I was sorry I hadn't emailed her along with everyone else to let her know I was coming to town. (I was thinking that if I hadn't moved, we would have certainly hung out and been friends after the class ended, but I did move, and so I didn't want to be weird or push things or whatever.) I will definitely email her next time I visit, though, because she's supercool. Lunch with B and K and C was awesome as well. I missed beef teriyaki like whoa. I also missed B and K and C like whoa. Good food and good conversation and good friends. Kinda set the tone for the whole weekend.
After lunch, I walked up to Burdick's to meet Farbs, and Maddie too as it turned out, for hot chocolate. It was such a nice day we got iced chocolate instead and walked up to the little park on JFK to sit in the sunshine and chat. There was a guy playing guitar. It was lovely. Again, a shiningly wonderful moment in my weekend. Then we stopped in at Berks and UrbOut for a little shopping. Hooray!
I left Maddie and Farbs at UrbOut to book it back to Sara(h)'s, pick up some stuff, get gas in my car, and then meet Jorn to drive up to the derby. We hung out at Columbia House for a little while first, and I got to see Jorn's all-decorated room, which looks awesome. The derby wasn't hard to get to at all, and after some silly mixup over the tickets, we got in and joined Heather and Jason and Sara(h) and like six of her friends. Dann was ref-ing the bout, and Sandy was skating for the Nutcrackers. She was so cute! And Dann was so cute! He can point at people very well! It was just so cool to see him doing this thing that he's enjoying so much. I was very glad I decided by chance to come up on a weekend when there was a bout going on.
Jorn and I left after the second period; since we're not exactly experts in roller derby, one period of girls-in-hot-pants-and-fishnets going around a track is pretty much like another, Dann's ref-ing gesticulations aside. We stopped by Target to get Jorn Guitar Hero 2 and me a business purse. Hung out back at Columbia House and ate pizza and hung out with Susanna, and Heather when she got home. Good times. Dann got home from derby cleanup stuff just in time to give me a hug goodnight. Got back to Sara(h)'s around midnight and crashed.
Sunday, I met up with Jorn, Dann, Heather, Susanna, and Ebeth and Schrodinger for lunch. Schrodinger has a lovely spine (I saw pictures) and Ebeth is the cutest pregnant lady ever. The fruit-stuffed french toast at Christopher's is still my favorite. It was an excellent brunch and I was so glad to see everyone one more time.
My drive home was rainy and miserable (as if Boston, and lo, even the whole east coast, wanted to punish me for leaving). But I drove carefully, and I stopped to have chai with Sarah B in Connecticut, and that was an awesome break. And I got home safely and watched Top Model last night.
It was so good to see people this weekend. Being here in Philly, I've been kind of losing touch with myself; no one knows me at work, at least not in the who-I-really-am sense, and my parents only know sides of me, and I'm someone different with Laur and Rose and Coll than I am with my other friends. It was good to be with people this weekend who I can be myself with. People who know who I am and like me and who get my jokes and who I can say crude things in front of and who know what I mean when I say things like "Teh!" or "MAYBE!!!" People who know me. I miss that a lot. I'm afraid I'm turning into the stodgy gray-panted character I play at work. But if you think about it, November is half over, and then December will go quickly with the holidays, and then it will be January and I can start looking for apartments. And when I have an apartment, I can spend hours just being me, surrounded by my own stuff, where no one is watching. And I will find things to do where I will meet new people. And Things Will Be Better. Soon!
