OMG, so this giant roommate controversy erupted today. Here's our timeline...
LAST YEAR: Val asked me if I wanted to live with her in the Park Street Commons apartments on campus my junior year. She was moving in with three seniors and thus would need three new roommates when she became a senior. And since the Commons cost less than living in the dorms, come fully furnished with 1.5 bathrooms and 4 separate bedrooms, AND have a kitchen with an oven and a dishwasher and all kinds of fun stuff, I said yes.
TWO WEEKS AGO: Val text messaged me and said, "Emma's going to live with us, okay?" And I said, "Okay. Holly wants to live with us, too, okay?" And of course, this was okay, too. A couple days later, Emma found out she wasn't going to be able to live with us because her mom was being difficult...so we had about two weeks to find one other roommate. Fast forward to...
TODAY:
2:00 PM--Holly, Val and I had a pow-wow to decide on our fourth roommate. We had to have all four roommates go down to the Student Affairs office to sign the apartment contract by 5:00 today. We were deciding between Elena (a broadcasting girl who i love, but she's just really different from the rest of us) and Lacey (a first year student with a lot of post-secondary credits, so she will have junior status by fall quarter). We decided to ask Lacey because she would fit in better with the rest of us. Lacey was all for it, so we thought we were set.
2:15'ish--Went to the Student Affairs office and signed our contracts. They didn't say anything or check the status of how many credits we would have, but just let us sign the contracts and said they would call us in a couple weeks to see which rooms we all picked in the apartment. Fast forward to...
4:30 PM--I'm at home, getting ready to eat a good dinner, and Holly calls me. She says, "Callie! Where are you?" I say, "Home." She says, "Well, I'm at work, but Lacey called me. The Student Affairs people just called her and said that she won't have junior status by the end of spring quarter, so she's not eligible to live with us. They said we have until 5:00 to find a fourth roommate or else we would get thrown into the Commons lottery with everyone else." Holy fucking shit. I was pissed. They call us at four-fucking-thirty to tell us to find a fourth roommate in a half hour?? And there are only between 15-20 apartments available for new leases, and there are over 40 groups of people who want them, so the lottery is not our friend. I tell Holly to call and beg Student Affairs, all the while trying to get ahold of Val, who's in the WOBN meeting until 5:00!
4:40--Holly calls me back. Student Affairs wouldn't listen to her at all and said, "You have 20 minutes now." However, the WOBN meeting got out early, so Holly had gotten ahold of Val and she was going to ask Elena to live with us. I called Student Affairs to see if I had to come back over and change the names on my contract. They said no, but the lady was like, "Oh...there's this girl here who needs a place to live. Her friends told her to come over and sign a contract, but they already had a fourth roommate. So she was hoping that if you can't find someone, she could live with you?" I said, "Umm...you'll have to talk to Val about it, because it's technically her apartment to begin with." Hell no did I want to live with some complete stranger (Kathryn somebody??).
4:50--Holly calls me back. Apparently, Elena couldn't live with us either because she had made other plans. By this time, I was so frustrated that I was literally in tears. I didn't know what to do. So I told Holly about the Kathryn chick at Student Affairs and that if she and Val wanted to go down there and meet her, if they liked her and thought I would, too, it wouldn't matter. I was willing to go to desperate measures to avoid being thrown into the lottery. I just told Holly to call me back as soon as they found anything out. Sooo...fast forward to...
5:15 PM--I am freaking out. Holly finally calls me and says, "Callie, we figured it all out!" I said, "What? What happened?" She said, "Well, Val was walking out of the WOBN meeting with Tracy Timonere and they were talking about our problem. Tracy said that she thought she was living in the Tau Delta house next year, but that she hadn't made any promises. So if we wanted her to live with us, she would love to." No joke, it was a godsend. Tracy is absolutely a doll and I love her to death. She's super-responsible and fun and respectful. We really are broadcasting apartment, too! Val's broadcasting and PR, I'm broadcasting/speech comm and Spanish, Holly's broadcasting and journalism, and Tracy's broadcasting and political science. So honestly, after all the stress and frustration and uncertainty, everything really did work out for the best. I guess it was a blessing in disguise.
Okay, if you made it all the way through this, I have a cookie for you. But you'll have to come get it because I'm really freakin' busy. ;D
