Why Dust Haet Caterina

Hoohhhh. Right, this is a little trickier because IF I REMEMBER this actually never happens in the novels either, it's just a note the author left behind (and is in the like MISSING STORIES art book. Or. Something.)

This is one of the lynchpin incidents I always look at when thinking about Dietrich's character, actually XD; (The other two being the Radu-Dietrich in chapter 14 of the manga and then Isaak-Dietrich interactions ALL OVER CU... er. ANYWAY).

Dietrich views Cain somewhat convolutedly anyway. But we know he followed Cain the first time because WOW CAIN IZ SO POWERFUL or. Whatever. We know that Dietrich has a problem with authority and is fairly flippant about how he addresses people ranking above him. It's just "Isaak" or "Panzer Magier" but never like... with respect. However, Cain is "Cain-sama" and "Mein Herr" which could be because Cain can erase Dietrich by like, breathing, but there's also the indication that Cain is the only person Dietrich SHOWS deference to. Even though Isaak clearly pwns him that's not this essay.

This view of Cain is helped and hindered by the idea that Dietrich has no clear goals. The "Renew the world through flame" is... iffy at best. He seems to follow Cain to follow Cain -- or so it seemed. Fairly straight forward, right? Follow the force of Destruction's will (Cain has surpassed good and evil blah blah blah).

Except then Caterina undoes THIS ALL. While I wouldn't call Dietrich a fanatic I would certainly say that he has some sort of fanatacism side to him when it comes to the RCO/Cain complex. Ask me about that later. Or. Something. But anyway, she UNDOES his following Cain to follow Cain with words. Makes him think he isn't needed or whatever. WHICH. Is. Quite. Odd. And means that the above evaluation is either somehow false, there are more layers or Caterina is a motherfucking jesus of betrayals.

I'm going with a mix of the second and third. SHE has nothing to lose at that point and time in canon. So she can go all out. Dietrich as far MORE to lose. The RCO is getting closer to... whatever and I think also he is seeing that this may or may not be what he wants. He really doesn't want the world to end, imo. Dietrich seems more like the guy who would rule/strike back, but not completely destroy it (this could be wrong and/or variable blah blah blah needs another essay).

I am also going on the assumption that growing up Dietrich was told that Cain needed him. It would be very easy to keep him placated and controlled if it was hammered into him from an early age that while he was a tool it was the kind of thing to take PRIDE in. He was NEEDED and therefore everything else besides being needed was irrelevant. Considering his fairly loose cannon nature about everything else, this makes sense to me.

But coupling the "Oh, I see where the RCO is headed" with the idea that CAIN DOESN'T REALLY NEED HIM (see examples of whatever during canon, which I think is quite clear that he's a henchman and not an integral part) well... the facts are stacking up. And while Dietrich is crazy and a tool and at times completely willing to bend logic -- he's also smart. He doesn't want to die and has enough egotistical "I am better than other people" to motivate him to live -- even past the Cain is better than God syndrome. THIS TAKES A LONG TIME TO CRACK HIM THOUGH. (I'd say TAKING INTO ACCOUNT the squabbling of the RCO as some erosion on this as well. Annnd Isaak probably did something. I dunno what. BUT SOMETHING.) Caterina just saw all the fissures and applied just all the right pressure to make him switch.

... uhm. did this answer the question?
