Working retail in upper-class neighborhoods can be *terrible*. I've had that same theory--that wealthy people just aren't used to not getting what they want, and it makes them awful customers to have to deal with.

Speaking of strained customer-clerk relations, here's a scene from the Princeton post office, 08542, some time last winter. A middle-aged man had just left the counter and walked out the front door. The post-lady who'd helped him, voice conceding defeat, raised an appeal to the heavens, or to her co-workers, or to the customers: "No more professors! No more professors!" I hope she got her wish, at least for a little while.
