Grr. Argh.

A HUGE pet peeve of mine is...

when people point out that Marilyn Monroe would be "huge" by today's standards. What the fuck are they talking about? Have they looked at a picture of Marilyn Monroe? That is better proof than their statistics. Marilyn Monroe just never looked fat. She had the figure of Halle Berry I think. Yes I agree beauty standards have changed, but I don't think Marilyn Monroe is the best example of this. She looks skinnier than J. Lo to me. Maybe Mae West or something (would be a better example for beauty standards changing). I don't even care.

This all started because I read an article in the nytimes about beauty standards. I thought the article was going to be a scientific study of how a heavier look was "in." But no, the author based her suspicions that a heavier figure was becoming more popular on the following. One, she saw an exhibit of Victorian paintings and 2 and 3...

"Coincidental with this museum visit was the premiere of a network sitcom, "Less Than Perfect," with a mate-seeking leading lady who wears size 12, and the continuing popularity of the movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" with its winsome Rubenesque star, Nia Vardalos.

Something tells me that a subtle shift is in the works, which may result in a more reasonable feminine ideal - a figure that more than 1 percent of the population have hopes of ever achieving - and healthier women."

Anyway, it's really just the Marilyn Monroe thing that bothers me.
