I've read three books featuring incest. I just finished a novella by Ian McEwan, his first book called The Cement Garden. It was cool to see how much smarter he got, or more learned or masterful or whatever as he grew older. Ian, I mean. there was definitely something really compelling about this book. It was really predictable in a lot of ways. Definitely should have been longer. I was happy when the brother and sister finally got together. It just seemed more natural than other incest books like say the inimitable FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC. I mean, I totally bought flowers in the attic. But, whatever, I guess I felt this was less sugary coated. Oh I mean I was happy only because they dragged it out for so long. And unlike Flowers in the Attic or Middlesex, they weren't like together because they were fucked up in special ways only they could understand. I don't know. I can't really explain what I mean. Ian McEwan's such a good writer, though, that I think I could like anything he wrote. Up until this point I had only seen current pictures of him. The Cement Garden had a picture of him from like 1977. Yum, yum. He had kind of longish hair (well, halfway down his neck) and the same glasses. He has a nice long face and is skinny. I looked for a picture of him to show you guys but all they have are the older pictures. Still, I think you can see potential in them.
