"i'm never gonna know you now, but i'm gonna love you anyhow."

we all have “celebrities” who have affected us in some way- artists, actors, writers, athletes, musicians, etc. we may not know them, but if something terrible happens to them, it affects us negatively.

i was a huge duke basketball fan when i was younger. when bobby hurley was in that bad car accident, my junior high self cried like a baby. when kurt cobain killed himself, i was devastated. i love nirvana, and they opened me up to great music. elliott smith’s death didn’t hit me until late last night, and that’s when i cried for a complete stranger again.

there will always be those people who instantly have to take the opposing stance to the “popular” feeling. i have noticed that most of these people are very young. i think we all went though that stage; you are trying to teach yourself how to be witty, sarcastic and biting and you are trying to do it in (what you think is) an intelligent way. you use big words you have heard other's say, regardless if you know the full meaning or not. the same goes for ideas and opinions. once you grow up, you are embarrassed when you realize how off you were. but, i suppose that is how you mature and learn.

to dismiss someone’s feeling over elliott’s death is not only mean-spirited and pompous, but it is just flat out wrong. no, i did not know him. rather, like most everyone else, i knew his music. these arbitrary “you didn’t know him, you only knew his music so stop your crying” comments are so silly that i am not even going to address them. most everyone knows that statements like those are just plain stupid. when you get older, maybe you’ll realize when to keep your mouth shut. i have always found that to be a good meter to judge someone by- if they have no “cooth” (as my mom says) and they say mean and thoughtless things constantly, i usually dislike them immensely.

i have seen a lot of “if you can’t spell is first name right, then you aren’t a fan” comments, as well. good lord, are you really serious? really, grow up.

did you hear the “now he’s going to get big” crap? are these people afraid he’s going to end up on trl or on a world tour with britney? he is dead. if this means his music will be listened to by more people, good. really, good, because more people should. to say the same thing about people like elvis, john lennon or johnny cash is stupid. do you need a refresher course in “music legends 101?” their deaths do not take them from nobodies to somebodies, you know. again, people who say these things are really showing their intelligence.

i am going to grieve over elliott’s death. your childish comments are not appreciated, but they are not going to stop me. when some “celebrity” that you care about dies, you will find that most everyone will keep their mouths shut and let you grieve.

the next time this happens to someone else, you should do the same.
