Two Weeks To Go

Nov 04, 2006 16:10

Well, it is officially two weeks until the Wii is released on North American shores.  Less than that until I am camping out in front of my local Best Buy, because I'm fucking retarded for Nintendo.

The sad part is that, while I am *excited*, I am in no way as excited as I was for either the GameCube or the Xbox 360.  How fucked up is that.  I mean in two weeks I'll be playing a new Zelda game (assuming the component cables are released in time for launch, cause I refuse to hook this fucker up with A/V cables) and I am just not that hyped for it.  It's Zelda, I should be going fucking apeshit, right?  I think part of the reason I'm not too hyped for Zelda is that I have tried my best to stay away from screenshots and videos for fear of spoilers.

But, yeah, the Wii.  I dunno.  I'm not sickened by the name anymore.  It's kinda grown on me.  And despite the whole gameplay over graphics mantra that I usually adhere to (the DS rocks the PSP's socks even with inferior graphics) the Wii's subpar graphics capabilities are annoying.  I can totally understand Nintendo's stance, Next Generation has become all about graphics and little else, plus (and this is a BIG one) it is becoming more and more expensive for companies to create original games.  Thus, they will only bank on tried and true franchises AND prices go up.  $60 for a new game is ridiculous, especially when you add in the new trend of selling extra content online, where you have to buy more and more levels and tracks and vehicles online to get the whole game (I'm looking at you EA, selling cheat codes for $4 a pop on the Xbox Live Marketplace is disgusting).  Nintendo is taking a step back and essentially saying, "Hey, develop for us, we've got a new system with marginally better specs than last gen, and a new way to play games.  It'll cost you less to make your game."  And I respect that, but it still bothers me that I'm essentially playing the GameCube with a new body and a controller.

I had a dream last night.  It was, like most of my dreams, very epic and weird.  It was a weird combination of Splinter Cell and V for Vendetta.  V attacked a government building or something, and I went and hung out with him.  That's what it basically boiled down to.  The reason I mention this is because for some reason V had a Wii.  And I got to play it.  I was playing Mario Kart Wii (which doesn't even exist yet) and I hated it.  I came to a realization whilst playing this game.  Excite Truck, a Wii launch title, has controls where you turn the Wii-mote on it's side and use it like a steering wheel.  And that's how I was playing Mario Kart Wii, and my realization is that every racing game is going to control like that...and I don't want to steer like that.  I like steering like that only marginally better than controlling characters movement with the stylus on the DS (Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, I'm looking at you).

Anyways, yeah, so I'm in a whiney mood.  I'll be there at launch.  I'll get my Wii, and I will love it, regardless of whether or not it's because I am a Nintendo Fanboy.

Oh yeah, I'm actually more excited for Trauma Center Wii...go figure.
