I Am In College

Oct 03, 2005 17:38

So, college is pretty cool. I still haven't had any real work: no assignments due, or quizzes, or tests. That worries me a little bit; in some classes, I won't know whether I'm doing stuff right until I get to the end and fuck it all up.

My roommates are awesome. I got lucky (in the sense that I had good luck, not that I had sex with my roommates)(not that the latter isn't true, it's just not what I meant).

The extra freedom is absolutely wonderful. It's not just being away from my parents; it's the ability to do stuff literally whenever I want. Totally awesome. I'm also a huge fan of the way that I enjoy doing reading and work for all my classes (it's possible that this may change, but I don't see it happening anytime soon).

I'm a pretty big fan of the food, too. It's not as good as mom's, but hey, what is? Have recently discovered how ordering stuff at the grill works; this will probably keep me entertained for a while.

I wish Mikaela and I had more free time to see each other, but that was a problem before college, too, so I won't pin that entirely on the move.

"Although the desire to bask in reflected glory exists to a degree in all of us, there seems to be something special about people who would take this normal tendency too far. Just what kind of people are they? Unless I miss my guess, they are not merely great sports aficionados; they are individuals with hidden personality flaws: poor self-concepts. Deep inside is a sense of low personal worth that directs them to seek prestige not from the generation or promotion of their own attainments but from the generation or promotion of their own associations with others' attainments. There are several varieties of this species that bloom throughout our culture. . . the behavior of such individuals shares a similar theme--the rather tragic view of accomplishment as deriving from outside the self."
