Day 19, Late Afternoon
For three days Gwendal had tried to distract himself and give Murata time to
cool off. In all that time, he hadn't seen the Sage once. At first, he kept himself busy with
any little tasks he could find, and it had worked rather well, until yesterday's
uncharacteristic episode.
But gradually, the reasons that he had wanted to stay close to the young Mazoku returned to him, and he started to worry. Every moment he was apart from Murata,
anything could happen to him. He was still too proud and stubborn to ask for help, and Gwendal didn't want to make matters worse between them by telling
yet more people about his partner's troubles.
By the afternoon of the third day, he had had enough. A quick word with the maids gave him the location of Murata's new quarters. If the youth felt that his privacy was being invaded and refused his protection, he could at least make sure that one of the guards was assigned to him for the present. But without anyone watching over him, Murata was an easy target, and his tormentor could return and start looking for him at any time. A firm hand in the matter of a bodyguard would be necessary to prevent further suffering.
With his resolve showing clearly on his face, Gwendal knocked on the door and, receiving no answer, tried to open it. Perhaps the youth was out, or taking a nap. "Murata," he called softly. "Are you there?"
