Last night, I went to see Evanescence at the Hollywood Palladium. This was the second time that I've seen this band perform live and they are one of my favorite American bands. The first time I saw them was on the Family Values Tour back in 2007 at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. I've never been to The Palladium before even though it's been around for a long time and it's one of the legendary concert venues in Los Angeles. There are a lot of bands that have played there that I wanted to see, but never did. I went after work and it was a 7PM door time. I had to stop off for dinner before going, so I made it up there right before door time. Of course, the line was already really long by then and it was over half way around the block. I didn't mind. I'm somebody who just hangs in the back of the general admission area anyway so I really don't care if I was the last one in the door. It went really fast though. I got in with plenty of time to buy myself some merch and go into get into the concert area. It's really a beautiful venue on the inside. The balcony is part of the general admission area, and there were a lot of people up there, but I chose to stay on the ground level. It was a sold out show, but there was still plenty of room to move about. We weren't crammed in there like sardines and that was good. For the opening bands, I just sat against a wall because I really didn't care.
The first band was Rival Sons and they weren't very good. Every song sounded the same--some kind of Southern rock thing going on. I really didn't care. The second band was The Pretty Reckless and they were a lot better. They had a female lead singer who was pretty good. At the merch booth, people were actually buying their stuff, so I guess they have some sort of following. Their cover of "Like A Stone" by Audioslave was really good. They played a pretty good variety of songs, which was nice.
Evanecence hit the stage a little after 10PM. I thought the show would be a little longer, but it lasted about 90 minutes. A lot of it was from their new album that was released earlier in the day, so I hadn't heard any of the songs except for "What You Want". Of course, there was quite a bit from the previous studio albums as well. I've always wanted to see them do "My Immortal" live, which they didn't do the first time I saw them perform. This was the first show of the tour, so they looked and sounded pretty fresh. I didn't really like the performance on "Your Star" though. The vocals just weren't that great on that. Still, it was a really awesome show and it was nice to see them in a much smaller venue. A lot of the new music is really good. I definitely have to get the new album soon.
