You know, I work hard all week just to get to the weekend and perhaps try to do something fun. For the past few months, the weather has been unstable. We've had more rain than usual. It rained Friday night, but I didn't feel like staying in on Saturday. The morning news said that if it was going to rain, it was going to stop by noon. I did a few errands in the morning. During that time, it started raining very hard. There was a time where I pulled into a parking garage and sat there waiting for the weather to get better. After awhile, it actually became sunny, so I set out to Griffith Park to do some hiking.
I chose to hike in the park in an area known as Bronson Canyon. The weather looked okay. It was afternoon already. After parking, I headed on the trail to the north. Supposedly, you can get really close to the Hollywood sign on that trail. The trail was very muddy, but it seemed okay. Less than 10 minutes into the hike, it started raining very hard, so I turned back. Because the trail was so muddy, I couldn't run because I might slip. By the time I got back to the car, I was completely soaked. I was just wearing a sweatshirt and pants, so they weren't any good anymore. Luckily, I brought a change of clothes and a heavier all-weather jacket so I changed into dry clothes.
Soon, it was sunny again. Other people were arriving in the parking lot and they want to hike up to the Hollywood sign. There were 2 guys from Nevada and some older guy with two dogs, so all of us attempt to go up the trail. After making it to the place I turned back before, the trail becomes very steep. It's a brutal trail. After about 30 minutes of climbing, we finally make it to where it's not so steep anymore, but the guy with dogs decides to go back. Me and the guys from Nevada keep going. Eventually, it starts raining again. We are too far from the cars and there is nowhere to take shelter, so we have to keep going. The rain gets harder and it doesn't take long for us to get drenched. My jacket is waterproof, but my pants are not. It takes almost another 30 minutes to get a good view of the Hollywood sign. The guys from Nevada want to keep going, but it's almost 3:30 already and I decided to head back. Hopefully, I can get back to the parking lot at about 4:15. Since it was all downhill, it was pretty easy, but footing was not very good. On the walk back, the sun came out, so my clothes started drying out. This time, it looked like the rain was over for good.
There's still some daylight left, so I want to try the trail to the south.
This time, I bring my camera with one lens. I want to travel lightly. After a few minutes walking, I get to area where there are some caves.
Yeah, it's the old Batcave from the TV show.
It's very wet inside, so I don't want to go in.
The view of the Hollywood sign is also pretty good from here. Honestly, it's better that what I saw after climbing the other trail.
I walked around to the backside of the mountain and there is another small cave that doesn't go through the mountain.
I didn't bring a flashlight, so I don't want to go in. It's also very low, and I'd have to crawl in and get very dirty if I wanted to go. I didn't have any other change of clothes so no way.
I thought that the area was actually quite pretty even if it was all muddy..
It was almost getting dark, so the ranger came by to make sure everybody was okay.
Some other people came to check it out also. These people had lots of camera equipment. They asked me about the hike to the Hollywood sign. I told them it was tough and it would be worse if they tried to bring all that stuff with them. It was getting too dark and they would not have made it anyway.
Since it was getting dark, they were going to close the gate into the park, so I decided to get going. My clothes were still a little wet, so I drove back to the South Bay with the heater on full blast and it worked. I was pretty much dried out by Torrance. I went to get a bite to eat from the Kogi trucks that were out at K1 Speed. They brought 2 trucks so it moved very quickly. I passed on the shave ice truck this time because it was too cold.
Today, my legs were pretty sore, so no gym today. I went out to Balboa Lake just to see how things are coming along out there. That park is pretty wet and muddy too. So today was more hiking through mud. It was a nice day. Lots of people were out at the park. Cherry blossom look like they're still a few weeks away though. Hopefully, it will turn out okay. At this point, all I'm gonna hope for is some decent blossoms and a dry park when they finally come out. Mud is not fun. I'm also hoping that I'm available on the weekend that they come out because that isn't a sure thing right now. I got home just in time to watch the overtime of the Olympic hockey game. That was pretty exciting. It's been a relaxing day. It looks like rain for next weekend again. At least, I was able to get out and enjoy this weekend. Well, I suppose Saturday was enjoyable. I dunno.
