Old man rant -- Why nobody can remember anything any more

Many aeons ago, a third of a century ago in fact, when I was young, I knew my home phone number. This was in a time where there was one phone in the entire house, and maybe one in the master bedroom. (and you could have any color phone you wanted, so long as it was black or white). I can still remember it now, 888-2369, even though we moved out ( Read more... )

Actually, they started giving out condoms back in my first year or two of college, the late 80's was all the rage for that sort of thing. I remember all the religious groups picketing the Kansas Union for giving out free condoms to the students. Other than the extreme ultraconservative fringe movements, most people don't consider it a big deal today.

I can say though, that I had to walk in the snow, to school, uphill, both ways. The way that KU's campus is laid out, the dorms are on a big hill, and then you end up walking into the big valley where Allen Fieldhouse and the rest of campus us, and then back up another hill that is Mount Oread.
Lawrence got hit with a blizzard the day of my Calculus I final, and all the campus buses stopped running-- but they of course didn't cancel or postpone the final. Having no other choice, I walked in foot-high snow with my tennis shoes and a light jacket, having just arrived from California (this was my first year, first semester) and blinding snow. Uphill, both ways. That's where I learned that "coat" and "jacket" are different things when you're not in California, and that you have to buy tons of winter gear, or you die of hypothermia.

Ironically enough, the "Grumpy Old Man" skit on SNL came out about that same time-- aeons ago, now. ;)
