Several runners-up included Jacques Sauniere (Da Vinci Code), Iago (Othello), The Brain (Arthur), Dak Hamee (Animorphs (and in double-checking his name I found a list of minor Hork-Bajir on Wikipedia; wtf)), Sherlock Holmes, Hermione Granger, Richard Rivers (Fingersmith), and Flannery Culp (The Basic Eight--I think Flan may be my #1 favorite character ever, but I had to leave her off because I guess she's really not that smart).
I was going to take this opportunity to go all meta--what IS genius, anyway?--but when I grow up I want to live in a basement with chalkboards for walls and do math all day and have Einstein hair, and unfortunately there's no clearer way to affirm the establishment than that, so I can't even really pretend to be a nonconformist.
