The sum total of what I know about this topic consists of
1) Everything I gleaned from skimming through Angels and Demons
and
2) Information from the first three lectures of Physics 200.
But I still find this really cool: McGill physicists to help launch world's most powerful particle accelerator
There are going to be, like, actual festivities for this. Old physicists with crazy hair will be wearing party hats and possibly even getting drunk. Partay.
