HAPPY FOURTH!

Jul 04, 2005 13:27

I went to see the fireworks last night.

And I haven't done that in... oh, six years. I've been at camp. And, once, in England. That was the best, because we celebrated the 4th by seeing The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, Abridged, which I would definitely recommend, if you can find it playing anywhere. When we got back to our hotel, someone set off a few fireworks. And all the tourists (who outnumbered the Brits 2:1, at least) were like, "Yay, it's the fourth of July!" And all the natives were like, "Ahh! Terrorists!"

Last night I had a great spot; there were lots of people but I could see okay. And it was PERFECT. Even though I was alone. My family insisted on sitting about a mile away, so I had to ditch them. But the people near me had a radio, so they were infinitely cooler. (We had liver sandwiches. Which would you pick?)

Anyway. Who wants to go with me tonight? Or have a barbecue? Yes? I thought so.

Ah, Garrison Keiller. "The fourth of July is the anniversary of America's independence from the British. So we celebrate by doing things that would really irk them. That's why we have fireworks. And we don't do British things. Like, tea. Don't fuss with the tea. If you have to have tea, put the bag in the water and pop it in the microwave. That's all."
