so i'm in the process of a writing a term paper on a streetcar named desire. funny i know. but now i'm looking at the play from an even deeper perspective and the message that tennesse williams was trying to portray. as much as im sick of writing this paper, i love how brilliant this man was! ive been quoting and analyzing his intro to the play called "a streetcar named success". if you've never read this you should. it's been a sort of shitty week but fuck this essay is so inspiring i have to quote a bunch of it right here right now.
**if you need some inspiration read up!!!
-some pieces from the essay that i think u should know....
"Successs has come abruptly into the lives of americans. no, my expirience was not exceptional, but neither was it quite ordinary. The sort of life which I had previous to this popular success was one that required endurance, a life of clawing and scratching along a sheer surface and holding tight with raw fingers to every inc of rock higher than the one caught hold of beefore, but it was a good life because it was the life for which the human organism is created."
"It is only in his work that an artist can find reality and satisfaction, for the actual world is less intense than the worlfd of his invention and consequently, his life, without recourse to vviolent disorder, does not seem very substantial. The right condition for him is that in which his work is not only convienant but unavoidable."
"Success happened to me. But once you fully apprehend the vacuity of a life without struggle you are equipped with the basic means of salvation. Once you know this is true, that the heart of man, his boyd, and his brain are forged in a white hot furnace for the purpose of conflict (the struggle of creation) and that with the conflict removed, the man is a sword cutting daises, that not privation but luxury is the wolf at the door and that the fangs of this wolf are all the little vanaties that success is heir to- why then with this knowledge you are at least in a position of knowing where the danger lies."
"Security is a kind of death i think. Ask anyone who has expirienced the kind of good i am talking about- what good is it? Perhaps to get an honest answer you will have to give him a shot of truth serum but the word he will finally groan is unprintable in genteel publications."
**********"Then what is good? The obsessive intrest in human affairs plus a certain amount of compassion and moral conviction that first made the expirience of living ssomething that must be translated into pigment or or music or bodily movement or poetry or prose or anything thats dynamic and expressive-that's whats good for you if you're at all serious in your aims. Purity of the heart is the only success worth having. In the time of your life- live! That time is precious and doesn't return again. It is slipping away while I write this and while you read this and the monsyllable of the clock is loss, loss, loss unless you devote your heart to it's opposition."***************
take it from my man tennesse, LIVE, lifes too short.
