Today, July 9th is an anniversary of sorts. It's a year to the day that Ianto Jones died in quite possibly the stupidest, most plothole laden episode of a miniseries I have ever seen. Add to that pointless, meaningless and unintentionally funny, i.e "Save your breath", and you get the picture. This was neither stellar writing, nor an extraordinary

Well, and that was going to be part 2 of this post, because after seeing what amounts to child murder/sacrifice acted out for 'entertainment', I have very little doubt that TW, as Davies envisions it, has anywhere to go but down. Way down.

The happier news is this: this journey almost feels like the hero's journey in mythological studies, and the worst has been faced and is over, and not without pain and sacfifice, when suddenly we emerge into a clearing where there's sun and trees, birds singing and hope.

And that would be DW5 under the writing wizardry of Steven Moffat, whom I would place a week's wager would never, ever offer up the nihilistic depressing crap that Rusty offered on a silver plate on Day 5 of Children of Earth. His heroes may be flawed, and they may get knocked down from time to time, but damned if they don't pick themselves up and go on from there, even to the point of sacrificing their existence for the universe, but not before giving one little girl her parents and life back.

Yeah, there is hope after CoE.

After sitting through CoE, I don't really care to know anything more about the characters. Gwen walked off to have a baby; while she was immensely enjoyable as a truly irritating character, for that very reason, I could do without seeing more of her not-very-interesting story and annoying personality. Rhys devolved into a blob by the end of CoE. Andy was revealed to be a homophobe. And Jack....It must've been quite a challenge to shred what had been one of the most engaging characters on TV. But Rusty succeeded, and I don't care where Jack ends up: he's now cruel, stupid, self absorbed, cold, borderline abusive....

In contrast--I wish DW6 were starting next week. I miss the characters, and I can't wait to find out what happens next with them....

Oh, and before I let Children of Earth sink down into the morass it is, one last observation: every child who was killed or hurt in any way on Day 5 right down to Gwen's thoughts about abortion, was hurt by a human, not the aliens. Way to go, Rusty, for showcasing one of the most insidiously self-loathing points of view, ever.

And now we have a Doctor who likes, if not loves kids. " The Doctor could never walk by a crying child." No, he couldn't, nor could he be the vehicle for making that child cry.

Oh my, DW5 is nothing short of a miracle after all that cynicism.

Aside from everything else about it, from its lousy writing onward, the whole point of CoE was to berate the audience...Rusty's neverending bombast: human beings are worthless, selfish, corrupt, evil, violent. When Frobischer is the litmus test of what constitutes a "good man," according to Rusty, you know you're in trouble.

No wonder Rusty's Doctor was always in a snit over having to help humans.

Yeah....Gwen, Jack, and a cast of Dead Men Walking--since the other two can't die, and Rusty needs to kill off characters in the name of Drama. The Star Trek redshirt policy applies.

And it's "bigger and better than ever"--just as CoE was advertised. Presumably, that means even more pointless deaths and gaping plot holes....except in Canada, now. Canada, guest starring as the US and Wales.
