I'll be the first one to admit I haven't been paying too much attention to the Miracle Day news, apart from speculating over the sensationalism of the characters, and the unintentionally funny shots of Eve Myles handling a huuuuuge gun. But, you know, there was always the dashing Capt Jack in the background and, while I could care less if Miracle Day drops into the cable equivalent of a bottomless toilet, I'd been nursing a desire to see The Coat in action again, for old times sake. Well, maybe not so much anymore.
According to an interview Barrowman gave, Miracle Day is going to reveal more about Jack, his darker side. I don't know - does it get any darker than offing your own grandson? Or selling out a busload of orphans, which is probably worthy of a Monty Python sketch in itself? Who knows, but according to the publicity, Jack and Oswald, the once pedophile and now just run of the mill child killer, have a love-hate relationship. Yeah, Captain Jack actually sees a part of Oswald that he can relate to, apart, I'm assuming from the child offing. So, um, yeah, the Captain Jack we all knew has been reinvented again, and replacing the rather charming, flirtatious con man and ex-Time Agent, we'll be getting someone who can find something to admire in a child murderer, because this is grown up tv for grown up adults, and we can all find something grudgingly praiseworthy of child killers.
In the second part of the interview Bill Pullman, who looked like the day after a bender, talked about his character the former pedophile and now just child murderer because as we all know, child killing is less morally repugnant than child rape, just ask Rusty. He spoke about the journey Oswald takes and how he doesn't think he'll make it to episode 10 having been given a deep kiss and thrown off the train before then. He actually makes that sound like a bad thing, too, because as we all know, when child murder is used as a cynical manipulation of the audience's emotions, then we also expect those silly audience members to also be so lacking in sense or moral turpitude or something, that they can't help admiring the Child Killer.
As for me, I'm waiting for all the Oswald: Tragic Hero and Jack's BFF icons.
