I do remember that you wanted to do this, and I think it is a good idea. One thing that occurred to me is that it could be set up as a beginner’s forum (not wholly for beginners, but majority marketed that way) but the way you could get most of the members is by having them “brought in” by other members in good standing. (At the beginning the “members in good standing” would be those who you find to write and moderate, after the “egregore” builds, the students would bring in others. Make it exclusive and private, but not quite like it is with traditional training-just sell it that way. In other words, appeal to the nature of all these sorts to be “special”, and the site to be unique, and invite them in. (And you are more than welcome to have use of my book reviews; I can give you copies of them non-formatted for LJ for posting purposes.)
As part of the ToS for the site, maybe they should have to read an understand the vocabulary as we use it-i.e. “Wicca isn’t a catch-all label for any newage muddle”, “magick doesn’t refer to wishing”, “paganism isn’t one big united religion”, etc. Maybe pass quiz to join? And cute it up-blingy web badges for those who pass the little quizzes-those are free and impress the ‘net denizens. But in spite of all of that, it can still be serious info, presented by serious folks. (Well, a sense of fun too, but you know what I mean.)
Another thought I had is that using the Moodle set up - like aforementioned The Firefluff Acadummy Firefly Academy-might be useful. I don’t know if it needs to be hosted on a private server, but in many ways it functions like php, which is a fairly good format. (And you have the techy-partner advantage with this and your own experience with php, so yay!)
