I haven't posted in more than a year, though I've made sporadic efforts to comment. In an effort to start again, I'm going to make a couple posts which will be largely the text equivalent of clearing my throat.
Some of this is old news, and much of it has been shared on FB already, but there's people here that don't read FB, so a brief high level recap...
I've been busy. Really, really busy.
Still married to Nat, also living with my gf Sam under the same roof. Nat's been dating a wonderful guy named Sean and that's going very well. She even asked me what my thoughts were about the 2 of them getting handfasted. Relationships are complicated things, aren't they? But certainly more healthy than any before. I'm pleased about that.
Nat's still fighting her depression but it's generally better than it was, though she continues to struggle with gainful employment, and inactivity. This topic deserves its own post, really.
In May 2012, I started a small community non-profit to donate vegetable/fruit/flower seeds and seed saving knowledge to gardeners. I've held classes that have been attended by around 200 people thus far and distributed about $2750 worth of seeds so far. There's an amazing 4 day intensive seed school that's held in Tuscon in April and I'm scheming to find the money to attend. I've got some big plans for 2014, which I'm tinkering with as we speak. Also, a year end report for the website and one grant agency.
Finished grad school in November of 2012.
I joined the El Paso County Search and Rescue team in January of 2013 and do backcountry rescue. Mostly it means we search for lost hikers in the national forests, stabilize and transport the injured (broken ankles, legs, ribs, exposure issues, altitude sickness, etc) to safety, and so on. Last weekend for example, I spent a number of hours hiking into a canyon in the snow & dark (with one colleague), following a set of tracks to locate a couple younger guys who got turned around. I helped retrieve a family that got lost while cutting an Xmas tree not long before that, and helped stretcher out a subject who took a knife to himself before that.
No shit...there I was... A tyrolean traverse across a small gorge. I love this stuff.
It's been almost 2 years since I was back east to personally catch up with most of you, but I have semi-specific plans for a longer visit the first half of this year.
