So, I don't think we thought this one all the way through.
About a year and a half ago, Hubby decided to rip apart the basement and make a home theatre type thing. He was really careful and laid down blue, plastic tarps with canvas tarps over them. Fast forward to today. He's cutting through the carpet to put in some new studs for a wall. There are dark brown 'spots' here and there. He said some of the tape he pulled off of the carpet felt wet. I figure this to be mold. Can we save the carpet? Or once it has mold do we have to throw it out?
Help! It's nice looking Berber (sp?) and new carpet was NOT part of the budget! He's covered the entire basement level in the tarps. Eep.
*Edit*
We've decided to go ahead and remove the carpet as the mold is still 'damp'. That makes it less likely to throw off spores. He's down in the basement doing that right now. We both decided with my asthma it wasn't a good idea for me to help. He's wearing the correct mask for the job and gloves. I finished taping off the doorway with plastic and am SO glad I didn't turn the heater on earlier. This way we know the mold isn't in the HVAC system. It was in a weird straight line in one spot. Very odd. It seems brown and not black. We were considering it being dirt, but the tarps on top of it were plastic, so I don't see how dirt could have gotten through it.
So, what would you think of your neighbors carrying large rolls of carpet to their truck after midnight? Would you wonder who pissed us off? hah.
This blows.
So kiddies, what did you learn? Do not leave plastic tarps over floors in concrete basements. No air + dampness= mold/mildew.
