We had a near-drowning of a young child at the party, where the parent was absent from the pool area.

Go rescuers go! Drowning doesn't look like the movies; I really wonder what the most effective way is to get the word out. They do a good job in lifeguard training and swiftwater rescue, but I think most lay people expect flailing and screaming.
