Dear teachers, classmates and schoolmates,
How are all of you doing? Judging by the time you would be receiving this letter, I hope you would be satisfied, if not euphoric about your results. As you would have guessed from this letter, I regretfully cannot be present to receive my long anticipated results. The reason? I’m in Singapore, of course, not hiding under my bed in fright. Today, would be a very tense day for me as a few hours after you have read this letter, I would be attending an interview to qualify myself for the Nanyang Research Programme, a prestigious project organized by the Nanyang Technological University, here in Singapore. This should simply explain why I couldn’t be present today.
Correct me if I am wrong, I should believe some of you would be itching to, err… whack me, because, somehow, I have manage to elude getting walloped in the course of the previous year, partially due to the convenient date of my birthday, or because you were afraid of my response. But I digress.
Returning to the current matter in hand, I know that an insignificant letter would hardly matter in the big scheme of things today and the celebrations, if there are any, which will ensue this moment. So, before you get too bored by my rantings and ravings, I will get to the real reason why I am actually spending my sleeping hours in front of the laptop, typing these words.
First, I would like to wish congratulations to everyone who had actually put in much effort and time to achieve the grades that you see on your results slip today. I am sure, no matter what your results are, you have put in much strength and sinew before sitting for the exams, and this is a remarkable achievement in itself. So, be contented with what you have in your hands now, and move on with your life and what lies ahead. I sincerely pray that none of you get a nervous breakdown or become too disappointed by it. It is not worth crying over spilt milk now, even if the mess takes a long time to clean up.
Next, I would like to thank everyone who all the bittersweet memories that you have shared with me throughout all these years, and I daresay, those memories had a bigger impact on my life than you can ever imagine and the persistence will continue on. But then again, I do not really know if the impact is inclined to the positive or the negative side. However, now I find it hard to actually define what actually is good or bad, thanks to a certain subject I am offering here, and I shan’t bore you with its description.
I would also like to express my gratitude to my dear teachers and to all the dedication that you have put in throughout the five years I was here, because the knowledge hat I have received through you has proven integral in my studies and in the SPM, of course. I admit that I won’t be where I am today without your help and I know that you will always be praying for my safety and success, as you would for any other student. So, once again, I thank you, from the bottom of my heart and I promise, will continue to pray for your good health, especially Puan Hazizah, whom, if I remember correctly, is suffering from Parkinson’s Disease. As for the rest who are in good health, I hope that the students are not too hard to manage. I know how hard it is to control a class of chattering children.
Lastly, a very special thank you to Michelle, who has been a been a good friend, confidante, and role model all the way through this two years I had known you. I am also grateful that you have introduced me to the world of philosophy and a whole new outlook to the world. I’ll assume that only Michelle would know the importance of the enlightenment that she has inspired. Last but not least, I am indebted to you as you are the only person, other than my family, who knows my turbulent inner self and sought to relieve it.
Before I end this letter, I would just like to tell you that at this time, Kenny G is playing “Auld Lang Syne” in the background. It is purely by chance, because the Winamp is shuffling the playlist and there are about 50 songs in it. This may be the last time you will here from me, as everyone goes his or her separate ways after this. So long, farewell, auf wiedesien, goodbye.
Yours sincerely,
Zachary Kok
